Fernando Verdasco of Spain seized the Barcelona Open title by defeating Robin Soderling of Sweden by 6-3, 4-6 and 6-3 at the Reail Club de Tennis on Sunday. Verdasco who was seeded fifth and was ranked number nine took on the second seeded Soderling with great strength. The 26 year old who won his second title of the year won the first set after a thumping forehead down the line which secured him second break of a serve, putting Soderling at the back foot.
However, the Roland Garros runner up of the last year, Soderling came back into the match when he won the second set on Catalan Clay. But the third set saw him faltering and Verdasco who plays with his left hand gained a crucial break of 3-1 in this decisive set. Soderling lost the set by 6-3.
Verdasco entered the tournament as wild card entry at the last moment. After this win, he was added in the list of eight straight Spanish winner to win the Condo de Godo trophy. Verdasco who was hugely supported by his home crowds is looking forward to capture the only claycourt Grand Slam in Paris next month.
Verdasco felt very happy after the win and hoped that Rafael Nadal who missed the Open so that he can get some rest before the next week’s Rome Master did not play in the Grand Slam.
