The second round matches that took place on Tuesday saw some of the seeds take to the clay.
Seventh seed Alexandr Dolgopolov, was expected to make light work of Florian Mayer, but the popular German, roared on by a home crowd, had other ideas.
Mayer fought his way into to round three winning 6-3, 6-4, and will now face either Feliciano Lopez of Spain or wild card Jan-Lennard Struff in the quarter-finals.
Number three seed Nicolas Almagro cruised into the third round following a 67-minute 6-3, 6-3 victory over another German, Tobias Kamke.
Almagro never looked in any danger against an opponent ranked 63 places below him and after an impressive win over Lukas Rosol on Monday, Kamke went out with a whimper with a double fault on match point.
Almagro will face either thirteenth seed Mikhail Youzhny or Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez next.
