Former top-10 players Gael Monfils and Jurgen Melzer beat higher-ranked players on Friday (August 23) in North Carolina to advance to the Winston-Salem Open final.
France’s Gael Monfils was forced to fight back to beat Alexandr Dolgopolov 7-6 6-3 in the semifinals of the Winston-Salem Open on Friday.
Monfils had to recieve some treatment for an injury and went down 4-0 in the first set – but fought back to take the tie-break.
Monfils took the second set 6-3 to advance to a tournament final for the third time this season.
And in the other semi-final Jurgen Melzer, pulled off a big upset , beating American Sam Querrey, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
Melzer, ranked as high as No. 8 in 2011, broke Querrey’s serve five times and impressed with some powerful baseline hitting to win the first set.
But Querrey fought back winning the second set 6-4, before Melzer took the decider 6-3.
Monfils and Melzer each have four ATP tournament titles. The Frenchman holds a 4-0 lifetime record against Melzer.
