Serbia won both final rubbers to beat Canada 3-2 in the Davis Cup semi-final in Belgrade on Sunday (15th September).
Canada headed into the final day of their Davis Cup semi-final with Serbia on Sunday with a 2-1 lead.
However, Milos Raonic faced the daunting challenge of his first ever match against world number one, Novak Djokovic.
Djokovic duly broke him in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead.
The Canadian broke straight back at the first opportunity with the set culminating in a tie-break though.
Djokovic powered through the tie-break.
He played the key points well and created four set points with a blistering crosscourt forehand.Djokovic needed just one, taking the tie-break 7-1.
That was as close as Raonic got to Djokovic, winning just a furthe four games in the match.
He tamed the Canadian’s famously brutal serve and closed out a 7-6(7-1), 6-2, 6-2 win after a little more than two hours on court.
That result left the tie poised at 2-2, with everything hinging on the second singles match of the day – Janko Tipsarevic against Vasek Pospisil.
It led to a tight first set.
World number 23 Tipsarevic dominated the tie-break and created three set points following this backhand.
He converted the first of those, and a subdued Pospisil struggled throughout the second set, handing it to his opponent 6-2.
The Serbian player then took a commanding 5-2 lead in the third set and the result seemed to be assured.
But Pospisil had other ideas, forcing his way back into contention and taking the set into a tie-break.
Trailing 2-6, he then saved four straight match points – one with the help of a fortuitous net cord. But it was Tipsarevic who took the win, wrapping up the match by sending a forehand winner past Pospisil.
They will host defending champions Czech Republic in November.
