Alexander Zverev vs Joel Schwaerzler preview
Top seed Alexander Zverev will lock horns with home favorite Joel Schwaerzler in the first round of the Erste Bank Open 2024 on Monday (October 21).
Zverev started the year as a part of the winning team at the United Cup, and then advanced to the semifinals of the Australian Open. He made the last eight at the Indian Wells Masters, and went a round further at the Miami Open. He hit his peak during the clay swing.
Zverev won his first title of the season at the Italian Open, and continued his unbeaten run to reach the French Open final. He led Carlos Alcaraz by two sets to one but lost the match in five sets. His time on grass came to an end in the fourth round of Wimbledon.
The German reached the final in Hamburg after that but came up short against Arthur Fils. His title defense at the Olympics concluded in the quarterfinals, and despite good results in the lead-up to the US Open, he bowed out in the fourth round in New York. Zverev recently participated in the Shanghai Masters, and lost to David Goffin in the fourth round.
Meanwhile, Schwaerzler, 18, received a wildcard into the main draw here. He made his ATP tour debut at the Kitzbuhel Open in July this year, and fell at the first hurdle. This will be his second tournament on the main tour. He won his maiden title at the Challenger level earlier this year, and has compiled a 12-10 record this season at that level.
Alexander Zverev vs Joel Schwaerzler head-to-head
This will be the first career meeting between them, so the head-to-head stands at 0-0 for now.

Alexander Zverev vs Joel Schwaerzler prediction
Schwaerzler is a rising young talent. He won the boys' doubles title at the French Open this year, and reached the semifinals in singles. He also became the fourth player to win a Challenger title as the junior World No. 1 this season. However, all of his best results have been on clay.
This will also be Schwaerzler's second main-draw match on the ATP tour. Zverev, on the other hand, is a veteran of the tour at this point. He has registered some great results this year, and already has 59 wins under his belt.
A win over the World No. 3 would be an amazing way for Schwaerzler to announce his arrival. However, the teenager will have to wait a little longer for his debut win given the caliber of his opponent.
Pick: Alexander Zverev to win in straight sets.
