Kolkata, Jan 18 (IANS) Tamil Nadu’s Vishnu Vardhan won the men’s crown while Natasha Palha of Goa claimed the women’s honours in the national grasscourt tennis championships here Saturday.
In the men’s final, third seed Vishnu Vardhan banged 18 aces to carve out a 6-4, 7-6(4) victory over second ranked Jayaprakash Mohit Mayur at the Calcutta South Club.
Vardhan broke his statemate in the third game to pocket the opening set without much hiccups.
The second set went neck-to-neck, with Vardhan firing 12 aces and Mayur half a dozen, as it rolled into the tie-break.
At the break, it was 4-4, from where Vardhan took the next consecutive points with flawless serves and volleys to finish the set and the match.
The women’s singles final was a one-sided affair, with Palha brushing aside a feeble challenge from the experienced seventh seeded Rushmi Chakravarthi of Tamil Nadu 6-1, 6-1.
