Ben Shelton fell into Team Europe while trying to challenge a call during his doubles match against Carlos Alcaraz and Casper Ruud at the 2024 Laver Cup. The American teamed up with his compatriot Frances Tiafoe to kick off things on the third and final day of the exhibition event.
Team World did not make the best of starts to the Laver Cup, losing the first four editions on the trot. However, they made a triumphant turnaround in 2022 and have won the previous two editions.
After Day 1 ended with both teams tied at 2-2, Team World won three matches on the second day to take an 8-4 lead. The third day kicked off with the American duo of Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe taking on Team Europe's Carlos Alcaraz and Casper Ruud. The European duo got the better of the Americans 6-2, 7-6(6) to bring themselves back into the game at 7-8.
During the ending stages of the second set on Shelton's serve at 5-5, 40-40, Alcaraz hit a brilliant backhand volley that wasn't returned by either of the Americans. Ben Shelton, who ran after the ball, couldn't get there on time and raised his finger to challenge the call since he felt the ball had landed out. However, as he was doing so, the American fell over on Team Europe's side.
He ended up losing the challenge.
Ben Shelton to play Daniil Medvedev, Carlos Alcaraz vs Taylor Frtiz, and Frances Taifoe against Alexander Zverev on the final day of Laver Cup 2024
Ben Shelton, who just competed in doubles, is currently facing Daniil Medvedev in the second match of the day. The Russian played Frances Tiafoe earlier, ending up on the losing side. This is Shelton's fifth match in the Laver Cup having won two and lost two.
Alexander Zverev will take on Frances Tiafoe in the third match of the day. The two men hold the record for the most appearances (five) at the Laver Cup. The German has had a poor outing this year, having lost both his matches so far. The American, however, scored a stunning win against Medvedev but lost in the doubles.
If needed, the final match of the day will feature Carlos Alcraz taking on American No. 1 Taylor Fritz. Alcaraz lost the doubles on the opening day but has won his next two matches. Meanwhile, Fritz won his doubles on the opening day and defeated Zverev in singles on Day 2.
With the scores at 7-8 in Team World's favor, the team which will win two matches first will clinch the seventh edition of the Laver Cup.
