Right before he arrived in Shanghai, Carlos Alcaraz had a phenomenal run in Beijing at the China Open. After impressive performances in his opening rounds, he beat fifth seed Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals, before going on to down Jannik Sinner in the finals.

Alcaraz’s victory against Sinner in the finals left his coach a little emotional, and Juan Carlos Ferrero was captured getting teary-eyed over his student’s performance.

Speaking to the media after the match, the Spaniard explained his Ferrero’s reaction, saying,

“Well, I didn’t see him crying. That’s a good thing to know, I guess (smiling). But yeah, I mean, it was a really special win for me, lifting this trophy in front of my team, part of my family. It was a great moment for me. I guess he got emotional at the end because we all know what we went through the last month or the last two months. It was a really difficult moment on the court, off the court.”
“The last month we’ve been working really, really hard on the court, off the court, just to be able to feel this moment again. I’m going to say that’s why he got emotional. For me, it was special. For the people that are around me, it’s a special moment. I’m going to say that’s why,” he added.

For now, Carlos Alcaraz had had a strong start to his campaign at the China Open. The 21-year-old took down Juncheng Shang in his opening round before downing Yibing Wu in straight sets in his round of 32 match.
