What is the history of Lindner Family Tennis Center?
The Cincinnati Masters moved to the Lindner Family Tennis Center in 1979 after its original venue, the Coney Island amusement park, experienced repeated flooding from the Ohio River. The event is now known as the Western & Southern Open (or Cincinnati Masters).
The Kings Island Amusement Park in Mason and the Golf Center at Kings Island, which was situated on property directly across Interstate 71 from the park, were both owned by Taft Broadcasting, one of the tournament's sponsors.
The tournament's organizers, under the direction of Paul M. Flory, agreed when Charles Mechem, the chairman of Taft Broadcasting suggested that the event be relocated to the Golf Center.
At the new location, four DecoTurf II courts have been constructed, and the Center Court was created by using the bleachers from Coney Island. The addition of the original West Building in 1987, which gave players, the media, and fans access to luxurious suites, was one of the biggest expansions. A 1990 addition increased the number of suites and the Center Court's capacity to 10,000.
