Teenage sensation Joao Fonseca has engraved his name in the tennis fraternity with his performance at the 2025 Australian Open. He caused the biggest upset by stunning Andrey Rublev in the first round, thus becoming the second teen after Mario Ancic to register a win against the top 10 at a Grand Slam. His accomplishments continued as he won his first ATP singles title at the 2025 Argentina Open, defeating Francisco Cerundolo by 7-6, 6-4. At the beginning of the current season, he won his second Challenger title at the 2025 Canberra Tennis International, defeating Ethan Quinn.

Being the lowest-ranked player, Fonseca emerged victorious at the Next Generation ATP Finals in 2024 against Learner Tien. On his debut at the 2024 Madrid Open, he recorded his first win at Masters 1000 level against American Alex Michelsen. He has thus far emerged as a winner in two Challenger titles, with his first victory registered at the 2024 Lexington Challenger. He finished semifinalist and quarterfinalist at the Lyon Challenger and the Brest Challenger in 2024. As of February 2025, he has been coached by Guilherme Teixeira.

Joao Fonseca turned pro in 2024. Entering into his second consecutive ATP tournament (Chile Open) as the wildcard after the Rio Open, he made an official decision to turn pro. For starting his professional tennis journey, he forgoes his eligibility to participate in college tennis events for the University of Virginia. Before that week, Fonseca advanced to his maiden quarterfinal at the 2024 Rio Open, thus becoming the second since Alexander Zverev reached the last eight of the 2014 Hamburg Open.

On February 29, 2024, he shared an Instagram post that read:

"It was an incredibly tough decision for me and my family as I have been dreaming about living a college life in Charlottesville, playing the sport that l love with a wonderful team and coach, but, in the last months, professional tennis called me in a way that I simply couldn't say 'no.'"

"I was never pressured about making a decision towards college tennis. You gave me just the space for this. I can't thank UVA and coach Andres Pedroso enough for this," he added.
