World No. 2 Novak Djokovic will square off against Vit Kopriva in the first round of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships on July 1 (Monday). The Serb will compete in his first match after withdrawing from the French Open quarterfinals due to a knee injury.

Djokovic is a seven-time Wimbledon champion. His most recent title triumph came in 2022, when he defeated Nick Kyrgios in the final. The 37-year-old also reached the final in London last year, but couldn't edge past Carlos Alcaraz.

Vit Kopriva was born on 15 June 1997 in Bilovec, Czech Republic. He turned pro in 2015 and made his ATP main draw debut at the 2021 Swiss Open in Gstaad. The debutant quickly made a strong impression by defeating top seed Denis Shapovalov in the second round and Mikael Ymer in the quarterfinals. His run eventually came to an end at the hands of Casper Ruud in the last four.

Over the years, Kopriva has mostly played in the ITF and the ATP Challenger circuit. He has been constantly improving his game to compete against higher-ranked players on the main tour. The 27-year-old made his Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open this year and also entered the main draw in Miami. Despite a valiant effort in both events, he was eliminated by Sebastian Korda in Melbourne (R1) and Christopher O'Connell in Miami (R1).

Kopriva was ranked outside the top 250 in 2020 but is currently among the top 125 players in the world. He entered the main draw in Wimbledon via the qualifiers and outclassed French veteran Richard Gasquet in the final round.

The Czech player entered the Wimbledon qualifiers in 2022 and 2023 but failed to secure a main draw berth in both years. His grasscourt record lacks a bit of experience, but recent results showcase his potential to perform well.

The winner between Djokovic and Kopriva will take on either Alejandro Moro Canas or Jacob Fearnley in the second round.
