Serena Williams was once taken aback by her ex-boyfriend, rapper Common (Lonnie Rashid Lynn), continuing to speak about her even years after their break-up. She admitted feeling irritated by how he described their relationship in a way that suggested they were still together, when in reality, they were not.

Williams and Common were romantically linked between 2007 and 2010. Their relationship was relatively private, though they occasionally attended events together. The two later reportedly parted ways amicably.

In a 2010 interview with Harper's Bazaar, Williams shared her feelings about how their busy schedules drove a wedge between them. While she admitted her own schedule wasn’t easy, she pointed out that Common’s was even worse and accused him of failing to take responsibility.

"His schedule is actually worse than mine. He didn't want the responsibility. It's really tough," she said.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion then recalled calling her ex-boyfriend to ask why he was acting as if they were still together while promoting his film 'Just Wright.' This was after he referred to her as "beautiful, intelligent, fun, spiritual, and an incredible person" during an interview with Access Hollywood.

"So I called him and I was like, Why are you saying all this stuff when we're not together?" Serena Williams reveals.

Serena Williams and Common's break-up was initiated by the tennis legend, as the rapper revealed in a 2015 interview with Meredith Vieira. However, he also spoke openly about how, unlike with his other ex-girlfriends, he maintained a good relationship with Williams after their separation.

"Not every ex-girlfriend and I are still friends, but with some, I am. We got a great understanding, and I care about her as a person," Common said.

He added:

"It's not like every other person you talk to every other day, but you know, you still have that respect. You have love for them and want to see them do well."

Both Serena Williams and Common have moved on since then. Williams is now married to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, with whom she has two children: daughter Olympia and Adira. Meanwhile, Common is planning to marry his girlfriend, Jennifer Hudson.
