Will Fate be cruel to Novak Djokovic (Nole)?

I must admit I love this great Serbian player Novak Djokovic (Nole) having been at the stadium to see him win the Australian Open in 08.In which everyone fell in love with him due to his play and his very humourous impersonations. His take on Sharapova’s abhorrent grunting actually was measured like a small tremor on the Richer Scale………..Though the other thing that I viewed about his maiden Grand Slam win here was his fortune. In no way am I taking away from his victory, but just think about this.At the time Federer was dominating the game, but went into the tournament with an injury concern.Duly Nole beats him easily in the Semi’s.Then the other great player and current number one in Rafael Nadal was trashed in straight sets by the man of the tournament Jo Winfried Tsonga.

So Nole beats Tsonga in the final and is the justifiable and very popular winner.Though a few people were heard to remark that Tsonga played his final in the Semi against Nadal. Thus having little left for the final where he was in truth half the player he was against Nadal. So in the history books it read Australian Open Champion 2008 Novak DjokovicThough call me an old cynic, but you couldn’t help but think this victory was aided by Fate dealing Nole a slice of fortune. Thus in the few Slams after this triumph his chances have been cut down by the legends in Federer and Nadal and the fast improving Del Potro.

This was so apparent in the US Open this year.Where he played the best I have ever seen him play especially in the Semi against Federer on Roger’s pet surface. In this epic tussle he saved 2 match points when Federer was serving 5/4 in the final set.Though it was more how he saved them with his courage to not only take on a huge shot, but to make it.It was truly memorable. So for the first time in their Grand Slam affairs he slays his demon in Federer 7/5 in the 5th.So he makes the final against Nadal, who was steam rolling everyone, but with people for some God forsaken reason still doubting him on the surface. In truth no one was going to beat Rafa for his play was that far ahead of everyone else.Though Nole symbolically took a set off him and his play was truly stellar.

On watching this I thought two things.Firstly great sorrow for Nole for of his brilliant play and the 2nd thought was Goran Ivanisevic……..Now your probably thinking by that last thought that ive been drinking too much of my own bath water and aren’t thinking straight……. though let me explain.

Goran Ivanisevic was in his career undoubtedly one the best and most lethal players on grass.Though only won the title once in 4 attemps in the final. So you might ask why?Well in a sense it was cruel fate that he in the other attempts played two legends in the history of the game in Agassi and Sampras. On two occasions losing in 5 sets to these greats. So that’s how it relates to Nole in regards to fate standing in his way of future Grand Slam success. For at present Nadal is the best player in the game and showing signs of dominating with him in the peak of his career. Then there’s Federer who isn’t as great as he once was,but are you going to doubt him winning another few slams?

Lastly resting somewhere in Argentina after his wrist injury is the young prodigy in Juan Martin Del Potro. The man who many view as Nadal’s greatest threat. After winning the US Open so conclusively a few years back.So can Novak Djokovic compete with these great players?

Or will Fate be cruel to him like it was Ivanisevic?
