Rain rain go away was the theme at day 5 of Wimbledon with many matches being postponed to the 2nd of July. The day kicked off with the much-anticipated clash between 4th seed Stan Wawrinka and the returning Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro. In a tie that went back and forth, it was Del Potro who prevailed in 4 sets 3-6 6-3 7-6 6-3. It was a slugfest between two hard hitters of the tennis ball but it was Del Potro who came up with the goods when it mattered in the crucial points. The result meant the first big casualty in the men’s draw. It’ll be interesting to see how far the talented Argentine goes in the championships.
The day also saw Nick Krygios, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and John Isner among other seeded players proceeding to the next round of matches.
Day 5 also saw 7-time champion Swiss Roger Federer take to the centre court against qualifier Evans from Britain. It was a vintage Federer display which saw him send Evans packing in 41 minutes. It was a breezy 3 sets for the maestro who won 6-4 6-2 6-2 to continue his quest for the elusive 18th Grand slam title.
The day ended with World number 1 Novak Djokovic taking on the 28th seed Sam Querrey from the USA. In the next 40 minutes what took place sent shockwaves around the tennis world. The American with a big serve showed big heart racing to 2 sets to nil lead against the defending champion making some brilliant plays in the process. It will only be fair to say that rain saved the world number 1 as he had no answers whatsoever to Querrey’s brilliant all round game.
The duo will return to court on day 6 to complete their match.
The Women’s draw saw World number 1 Serena Williams take on fellow American Mchale on center court. After a grueling encounter, Serena finally prevailed in 3 hard fought sets 6-7 6-2 6-4. While the scoreline might suggest an easy outing for Serena it was anything but that. Mchale can take a lot of positives and will be one to look out for in future.
Day 5 also saw the other Williams sister Venus proceed to the next round with a victory in 3 sets just like Serena.

Preview
If all goes to plan and the rain stays away we can have a brilliant day of action at SW19 this Saturday.
The day will start with world number 1 Novak Djokovic completing his match against Sam Querrey and it will be an uphill task for the defending champion to come back from two sets down. If all goes well for the American it would be the biggest upset at a grand slam event in the last few years.
Day 6 will also see Britain’s number 1 and world number 2 Andy Murray face off against John Millman of Australia. It is expected to another easy outing for the Brit but knowing him he’ll be at his focused best to try and put away the Australian as soon as possible. With the last 8 soon approaching Murray will sense a good chance of going all the way this time around.
Also in action will be John Isner who will be facing off against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in a high-profile clash. Both the players ranked in the top 20 will look to make a statement of intent with a win.
In the women’s draw, all the top 5 seeds except champion Serena will be in action.
Simona Halep, Agnieszka Radwanska, Roberta Vinci and former finalist Petra Kvitova will all play their matches in a bid to proceed to the next round and challenge for the title.
