#2 Garbine Muguruza stakes claim to Serena Williams' throne
In the absence of the legendary Serena Williams, there were no clear favourites at both the French Open and Wimbledon. This saw Jelena Ostapenko surprise the field to take the win in France, while Muguruza stormed through her adversaries at The Championship.
Angelique Kerber with two Grand Slams in 2016, and Garbine Muguruza, thanks to her French Open win in 2016 and the Wimbledon crown in 2017, have been the ones to step up to the plate and offer anything close to a consistent challenge to the American's reign at the top. The Spaniard went through some of the toughest opponents in the draw en route to the crown, defeating top seed Kerber in the Round of 16, before blowing away Venus Williams in the final 7-5, 6-0.
Her standout power game and exceptional court coverage are her biggest assets, and at 23, she has shown that she has what it takes to reign at the top, becoming the only woman to have defeated both the Williams' sisters in Grand Slam finals.
