Su-Wei Hsieh, regarded as a doubles player, had lost her first-round matches in her recent visits to Wimbledon. She had never advanced past the third round. Whereas Simona Halep, the World No. 1, was crowned champion in the recently concluded French Open. Simona Halep won their only previous meeting five years ago in Cincinnati.

It was a game of unforced errors, where Halep was 5-2 up in the deciding set, but Su-Wei Hsieh clawed her way back, breaking the Romanian. She kept fighting and broke back from match point down and won two games in a row to seal the match.
