The 2024 Wimbledon Championships is slated to take place from the 1st- 14th July. With Novak Djokovic under an injury cloud, this year's tournament might see a definite change of guard in men's tennis.

The Serb suffered a knee injury during the French Open that saw him eventually withdraw from the tournament before his quarterfinal. He underwent surgery and has since been practicing at Wimbledon. However, Djokovic is yet to confirm his participation in the grass-court Major.

"I'm going to take it day by day and then make a decision based over the next four or five, six days and if I know that I can play close to my maximum or at maximum, then I'll play if not, then give somebody else a chance to play," the Serb said as quoted by Express.

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz comes in this tournament on the back of a historic French Open this month. Alcaraz became the youngest player to have a slam on all three surfaces. Other favorites for Wimbledon this year include the newly crowned World No. 1 Jannik Sinner and the French Open runner-up Alexander Zverev.

Here is the list of the 5 potential players who are the favorites to capture the Wimbledon title this year:

#5. Daniil Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev is one of the four players in the men's seeds to have won a Grand Slam. The 2021 US Open champion had his best result at Wimbledon last year when he reached the semifinals.

Medvedev's form in the lead-up to the major hasn't been particularly impressive. The Russian suffered a shock defeat against Zhang Zhizhen in the second round of the 2024 Terra Wortmann Open in Halle. Before this, he endured fourth-round exits at the Italian Open and the French Open.

As for the season, Medvedev is yet to win a title but made it to two finals at the Australian Open and the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. The Russian is among the best players in the world and while he hasn't been as goood on grass as he has been on hard, he is very much capable of having a deep run at Wimbledon as we saw in 2023.

# 4 Alexander Zverev

Alexander Zverev will have high expectations entering Wimbledon, having reached the final of the French Open. He started this year's grass season by reaching the semifinals of the Terra-Wortmann Open in Halle.

While the German is yet to reach a Wimbledon quarterfinal, he has had some god performances on grass, reaching two finals in Halle.

2024 has been a good season for Zverev. In the two majors of the year so far, the World No. 4 made it to the semis at the Australian Open, losing to Daniil Medvedev, and made it to finals at the French Open, falling against Carlos Alcaraz. He won the Italian Open by defeating Nicolas Jarry in the final.

# 3 Hubert Hurkacz

World No. 7 Hubert Hurkacz is a dark horse in this year's Wimbledon. The Pole did have a decent run at the All England Club last year as he reached the 4R, losing to Novak Djokovic in four tight sets.

Hurkacz has produced some pretty good performances so far on grass, having previously reached the semifinals of the grass-court Major in 2021, beating Roger Federer in the quarterfinals. He also won the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle in 2022 while reaching the final in 2024.

The Pole won one title in 2024, triumphing at the Estoril Open where he defeated Pedro Martinez in the final. In the two majors of the year, Hurkacz has made decent runs. He made it to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open (Losing to Daniil Medvedev) and made a 4R at Roland Garros (losing to Grigor Dimitrov).

# 2 Carlos Alcaraz

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz will enter the tournament as one of the hot favorites especially after his French Open triumph. The young Spaniard also won the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.

An upset loss against Jack Draper at the Queen's Club championships disrupted the Spaniard's preparations for Wimbledon. That loss made him slip from 2nd to 3rd in the ATP rankings

However, given the Spaniard's quality, we can always expect him to bounce back strongly at Wimbledon and make another successful run.

# 1. Jannik Sinner

Jannik Sinner will enter the 2024 Wimbledon as the top seed. This will be the first time the Italian will play at a major being the top seed. Sinner made it to the semi-finals at last year's Wimbledon, losing to Novak Djokovic in straight sets.

2024 has proved to be an exceptional season for Sinner. Despite being two sets down against Medvedev in his first major final, Sinner turned it around to win his first slam at the 2024 Australian Open. The title run also included a semifinal win over Novak Djokovic.

Sinner won his maiden grass-court title by winning the Terra Wortmann Open, defeating Hubert Hurkacz in the final. This holds him in good stead before Wimbledon. The Italian has also won titles in Rotterdam and Miami this year which has seen him rise to the top of the ATP rankings, dethroning Novak Djokovic after the Serb's long reign at the top.

Given Sinner's exceptional run of form, it will hardly be a surprise if he goes all the way at the grass-court Major.
