Seventh seed Jasmine Paolini is set to lock horns with Donna Vekic in the semifinals of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships on Thursday, July 11.

Paolini kicked off her campaign at the All England Club with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Sara Sorribes Tormo in the first round. She then saw off Greet Minnen 7-6 (5), 6-2 in the second round. Up against Bianca Andreescu in the third round, she navigated through a tough first set to eventually seal a comfortable 7-6 (4), 6-1 victory.
12th seed Madison Keys awaited Paolini in the next round. The pair split the opening two sets and were locked in at 5-5 in the decider, when the American was forced to withdraw due to an injury, handing Paolini a berth in the last eight.
Paolini took on in-form Emma Navarro in the quarterfinals. The match began with the pair exchanging breaks of serve. It was all Paolini from there on, however, as she reeled four games in to seal a comfortable first set. More of the same followed in the second set with the Italian racing to a 3-1 lead. Another break courtesy of some brilliant net play saw her go on to seal an emphatic 6-2, 6-1 victory in under an hour.
Vekic on the contrary opened her Wimbledon campaign with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 comeback victory against Wang Xiyu. She coasted through her second-round encounter against Erika Andreeva, dropping just five games en route to a routine 6-2, 6-3 victory.
28th seed Dayana Yastremska took her the distance in the third round, but Vekic proved her might in the decider to seal a 7-6 (4), 6-7 (3), 6-1 victory. She survived another three-setter in the subsequent round against Paula Badosa, eventually coming out on top 6-2, 1-6, 6-4.
Up against Lulu Sun in the quarterfinals, Vekic was edged out in a tough opening set courtesy of a brilliant drop shot winner on set point by Sun. Vekic fought back in set two with the early break but failed to close out at 5-3. She came right back in the very next game with a brilliant drop shot of her own to send the match into a decider. The Croat dominated in the final set, sealing two breaks of serve en route to a 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 victory.

Jasmine Paolini's dream run at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships continued with a dominating win over Emma Navarro in the quarterfinals, with the opportunity to make it into a second consecutive Grand Slam final still in her hands. She has impressed with her all-round grasscourt game and has excelled both from the baseline and at the net. She won 21 return points and hit 19 winners in her previous round. She also won 94% of her net points, failing to convert just one point.
Vekic, meanwhile, has been taken the distance in four of her five encounters but has somehow always managed to find the win. She has been particularly solid with her return game and demonstrated it once again in the previous round. She won 40 points out of 97 on her opponent's serve and converted four breakpoint opportunities. She was equally solid at the net, winning 91% of those points.
It is going to be a battle from the baseline which could ultimately boil down to who wins the decisive points at the net. Paolini holds the slight edge heading into the contest given her rich vein of form, but there is no discounting another surprise from the Croat who's delivered the goods under pressure. A thrilling encounter is on the cards, nonetheless.
