2021 finalist Matteo Berrettini will take on Hungary's Marton Fucsovics in the first round of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships next week.
Berrettini suffered a debilitating ankle injury during his second-round match at the US Open last September, following which he was on the sidelines for nearly six months. Regardless of the 28-year-old's game suffering from rust, he launched a successful comeback on the ATP Tour in April. He won his eighth career title in Marrakech against all odds, following it up with a runner-up finish in Stuttgart two months later.
Fucsovics, meanwhile, has enjoyed a steady career on the ATP Tour since making his top-50 debut in 2018. The World No. 69 dropped just one set en route to his second pro title in Bucharest earlier this year. For undisclosed reasons, he didn't compete in any tune-up events to this year's Wimbledon.
Matteo Berrettini vs Marton Fucsovics head-to-head
Fucsovics leads Berrettini by a margin of 1-0 in their head-to-head meetings on the pro tour. The Hungarian came from a set deficit to beat the Italian 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 in the semifinals of the 2019 Sofia Open.

Berrettini is one of the best grasscourt players in the men's field, having accumulated a 81.8% win rate (36-8) since making his tour-level debut in 2017. The Italian's game is well-suited to the surface; he possesses a big first serve, which he likes to follow up with either his dangerous forehand or devious backhand slice.
Fucsovics, on the other hand, is relatively better on clay and hardcourts than he is on grass. Having said that, he is a balanced shotmaker and can hold his own against top players. He made the quarterfinals of Wimbledon three years ago, giving more credence to his big match-playing ability on grass.
While the key to the clash for Berrettini will be dominating on his serve, Fucsovics will have his best chances when he's moving the 6'5" Italian side-to-side on the baseline. The former World No. 6 has been playing well since his comeback, though, and will most likely notch the win, as long as he is healthy.
Pick: Matteo Berrettini in four sets.
