Wimbledon 2014 seeds announced: Novak Djokovic top seed ahead of Nadal; Murray edges Federer

The seeding for Wimbledon 2014 is out! Novak Djokovic heads into the tournament as the No. 1 seed despite being ranked No. 2 in the world.

Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Roger Federer make up the top four in that order. Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka is seeded fifth.

Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam which does not determine the seeds based on player’s ranking. Instead, it calculates the points using an unique formula on the basis of each players’ grass court performance over the past two years.

This is how the players are seeded each year:

Total ATP points accumulated by a player till 16th of June (i.e., the Monday before the start of the tournament) + Total grasscourt points accumulated by a player in the preceding year + 75% of grasscourt points in the grasscourt event where a player has achieved his best result in 2012 (i.e., the year before the previous one).

Murray has definitely benefited as he is the defending champion here, despite being ranked No. 5 in the world. Therefore, he will not face the other three in Top 4 until the quarterfinals. He might face Wawrinka, Tomas Berdych, David Ferrer or Milos Raonic in the last eight.

Coming to the Womens’ seeds, Williams is the top seed ahead of Li Na, Simona Halep, Agnieszka Radwanska and French Open champion Maria Sharapova as the womens’ event sticks to the World Ranking to give the seeds
