World No. 123 Christopher Eubanks will take on World No. 61 Hugo Gaston in the second round of the Winston-Salem Open on August 20.

Eubanks has had a disappointing 2024 season so far, with only nine wins from 35 tour-level main-draw matches, a statistic that has seen him drop out of the Top 100 of the ATP rankings. The American's best performance this year was reaching the semifinals of the Hall of Fame Open in Newport. He also reached the quarterfinals of the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle.

Eubanks entered Winston-Salem at the back of a quarterfinal exit at an ATP Challenger event in Cary and faced Australia's Adam Walton in the first round. The 28-year-old had a shaky start to the match but bounced back from a set down to win 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 and book his place in the second round.

Hugo Gaston, on the contrary, has also had a tough season so far, having amassed just nine wins out of 19 matches, with a runner-up finish at the Austrian Open being his best performance. The Frenchman also reached the quarterfinals of the Lyon Open, but lost to compatriot Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in three-sets.

Gaston last competed in the qualifying rounds of the Cincinnati Open but suffered a 6-7(5), 2-6 defeat to Jaume Munar in his first match. The 23-year-old entered the Winston-Salem Open as one of the seeded players and this saw him receive a walkover to the second round.

Eubanks, known for his rocketing serve and aggressive gameplay, showcased his resilience against Whalton in the first round. Despite being outplayed in the first set, he dug deep to mount a fightback and settled the contest in three sets. The American won 80% of his first serve points against the Australian.

Gaston, on the other hand, came agonizingly close to lifting his first title of the year in Kitzbuhel. He defeated the top seed Sebastian Baez and Facunco Diaz Acosta en route to the finals, but couldnt tip the scales in his favor against Matteo Berrettini. The Frenchman will to build on his run in Winston-Salem.
