WTA Round Up - leads seeds into second round

The top seeded women all advanced to the second round of the ongoing WTA events in Estoril and Budapest.

In Estoril, second seed Maria Kirilenko was tested but came through for a 7-6(6), 6-1 victory over Brit, Elena Baltacha.

Anabel Medina Garrigues, a former champion here, was also among the winners on Tuesday, beating German qualifier Kristina Barrois, 6-4, 6-1.

“I couldn’t warm up properly because it was raining before, so the beginning was a bit strange, but I started to feel better once we got going,” Medina Garrigues commented.

“When you win a tournament you always want to come back and defend it the next year, but every match here is going to be difficult and I have to go step by step. Tomorrow I have another match. We’ll see.”

No.5 seed Zheng Jie beat Ekaterina Makarova, 6-3, 6-1.

In Budapest, Ksenia Pervak scored a 6-1, 5-7, 7-6(6) victory over Russian Vera Dushevina.

“It was a very tough match and she’s a very tough opponent,” Pervak commented. “I know her so well from when we played in Russia together and I’m really happy to get the win as she won quite easily last time we played.”

Top seed Sara Errani beat Mandy Minella 6-1, 6-1 win. “It was a good start,” Errani commented.

“It’s not always easy in the first round but I was enjoying myself out on court and I’m happy I didn’t use up too much energy. The courts here are quite slow and I think this is good for my game.”
