Jessica Pegula vs Wang Xinyu preview
Second seed Jessica Pegula will square off against home favorite Wang Xinyu in the third round of the Wuhan Open 2024 on Thursday.
After a first-round bye, Pegula was up against World No. 38 Anastasia Potapova in the second round. There was a fair amount of back and forth between the duo in the opening set.
There were six breaks of serve across the eight games of the set. Pegula managed to hold serve twice, which sealed the set in her favor. She snagged an early break of serve to go 2-0 up in the second set, and that's when Potapova called it quits due to an injury, thus sending the American into the next round.
Wang beat Caroline Dolehide 6-4, 6-0 to reach the second round, where she faced lucky loser Lucia Bronzetti. One bad game by the Chinese cost her the first set. She fell behind a break, and while she kept up with her opponent after that, she couldn't overcome the deficit to even the score.
Wang brushed off the disappointment with some focused shotmaking in the second set. Her efforts paid off, and she nabbed four games in a row to take the set. She continued to dictate the play at the start of the third set and even went up a break.
However, Bronzetti clawed her way back into the match to level the proceedings. She later served to stay in the match at 5-4, and Wang secured one last break of serve to complete a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 comeback win.

Jessica Pegula vs Wang Xinyu prediction
Wang dug deep to beat Bronzetti in the previous round and registered back-to-back wins for the first time since she made the fourth round of Wimbledon. Pegula became her first, and so far only, top 10 scalp back then.
However, their results have gone in the opposite direction since then. Wang was expected to use her Wimbledon run as a springboard to greater success. However, she has posted a 7-6 record since her exit from the All England Club. Pegula, meanwhile, has tallied a 19-4 record in the same period.
Additionally, Wang has a 0-3 career record against top 10 players on hardcourts, though she has pushed them to three sets on all occasions. Pegula has a 16-2 record against players outside the top 50 on hardcourts this season and has won her last 12 matches against them. The American's current form should see her through to the next round.
Pick: Jessica Pegula to win in three sets.
