Fans recently criticized Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian for his remarks on the increasing prevalence of "incel culture" online. Ohanian, along with Steve Huffman and Aaron Swartz, co-founded the social networking site Reddit in 2005.
Ohanian was involved with Reddit for nearly 12 years. He was with the company from its inception in 2005 until 2010, when he left to pursue personal interests. He returned to Reddit in 2014 and remained until 2020, when he resigned to start his own venture capital firm, Seven Seven Six (776).
Recently, Alexis Ohanian took to social media to address a concerning aspect of the online world. He expressed his belief that "incel culture" is a very "real" and "thriving" phenomenon online and warned that it will only worsen.
“Incel culture is real, and thriving online. As more and more young men realize the world is passing them by, faster than ever, I fear the crisis is only gonna get worse," Serena Williams' husband posted on X (formerly Twitter).
These comments by Serena Williams' husband did not sit well with tennis fans, who view Reddit, the platform he co-founded, as an alleged breeding ground for incel culture.
In light of this, some tennis fans took to social media to criticize Alexis Ohanian for his remarks and share their opinions on the same.
One fan believed that Ohanian has been a part of the problem of "growing incel culture", as his platform Reddit is a place where these flourish.
“Sir you are part of the problem. Your platform literally birthed this sh*t, refused shut down those communities. I honestly couldn’t care less about “incels”. I hope these so called start self existing at rapid rate, society is better without them," a fan wrote.
Some more fans claimed that Ohanian is not the appropriate person to speak on the growth of incel culture, given his role as a co-founder of Reddit
“This is the founder of reddit. a site that has multiple misogynistic rape subreddits up and thriving while feminist subs get banned all the time," a fan wrote.
“He flies under the radar because he’s a #girldad and his wife is one of the greatest athletes of all time but this man much like Jack is responsible for creating one of the most toxic online spaces to exist and is now trying to sell us the solution," a fan posted.
“— founder of Reddit," a fan wrote.
Here are some more fans expressing their criticism after Ohanian's comments on 'incel culture' :
“A good start is for parents to try to keep their teenage sons off Reddit," a fan posted.
“This is rich coming from the guy who gave incels an incubator for YEARS, With moderators who silence anyone talking abt STRUCTURAL oppression. To this day, u can't say words like 'patriarchy' and 'misogyny' on Reddit, And YOU were OK with that environment," a fan wrote.
“Did it not start on Reddit?," a fan posted.
Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian: “Early on these really radical communities never existed online"
Last month, while speaking on the 'On Purpose with Jay Shetty' podcast, Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian discussed the evolution of online communities. Ohanian reflected on the early days of the internet and mentioned that "radical communities" were virtually nonexistent due to the limited number of users online.
The tech entrepreneur also shared his initial concerns about Reddit's success when he first launched the platform as there were only very few people online.
“Early on these really radical communities almost never existed. Certainly back then ‘cause there were just fewer people online, 2005 starting Reddit, I was just hoping it would work. There were so few people online, actively creating content that for early years it wasn’t even a thing, never even came up. And when it did it was just an easy band ‘cause there’s a one off post,” Ohanian said [25:00 onwards].
Alexis Ohanian has diversified his business portfolio with various other entrepreneurial ventures in addition to his role as the co-founder of Reddit.
Alongside Serena Williams, Ohanian co-owns sports teams such as Angel City F.C., a professional soccer team in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), and the Los Angeles Golf Club (LAGC).
