21-year-old Indian tennis star Yuki Bhambri had a double celebration on Friday as he entered the semifinals in the singles category and the finals in the doubles category at the Asia-Pacific Australian Open 2014 wild card play off tournament being held at Luohu Tennis Club in Shenzhen, China.
Bhambri, who is the second-seeded player in men’s singles category, destroyed the local opponent Zhicheng Zhu 6-2, 6-1 to enter the last 4 of the tournament.
Bhambri, who is ranked 204 in the world, broke Zhicheng’s serve twice in the opening set. With a winning percentage of 94 on his first serve, Bhambri had absolutely no difficulty in winning the opening set.
The start of the second set was not that good for the Indian player as he lost his serve in the opening game but after that he made an outstanding comeback and didn’t allow his opponent to win even a single game, winning the set quite comfortably.
Yuki will now take on the world number 205 and third seed Di Wu of China for a place in the final.
In doubles, Yuki combined with New Zealand’s Michael Venus to defeat the Chinese pair of Chieh-Fu Wang and Jimmy Wang 6-2 6-0.
The Indo-Kiwi pair of Yuki and Michael, who are seeded second in the tournament, defeated the 3rd seeded Chinese pair in a match which lasted just 40 minutes.
They will now take on the 4th-seeded Chinese pair of Mao-Xin Gong and Zhe Li in the finals. Mao and Zhe knocked out the top seeded Taipei pair of Hsin Han Lee and Hsien Yin Peng in the other semifinal.
