Shanghai Masters History
The Shanghai Masters was founded in 2009, to spread the popularity of tennis across China as well as Asia. In 2010, Rolex became the primary sponsor for the tournament, which is why it was named as the Shanghai Rolex Masters. After a host of tournaments were previously held in the city, Shanghai was given a Masters-1000 tournament in 2009. Between 2009 and 2013, the event was awarded the ATP Masters 1000 Tournament of the Year - voted by ATP players.
Replacing the Madrid Masters in the month of October, the Shanghai Rolex Masters was presented as an official event in November 2008. It was organized by the Juss International Sports Event Management Company, and was promoted as “Simply the Best” event in May 2009. Since then, the Shanghai Masters has been one of the biggest ATP competitions in the calendar year.
