Incoming Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp wants to begin his managerial spell at Loftus Road by attempting to bring David Beckham back to England as he attempts to stamp his name on the London club.
According to British newspaper The Sunday Mirror, the former Tottenham Hotspur man is a keen admirer of the ex-England midfielder and will try to lure him to the British capital as one of at least three players he wants at Rangers.
Redknapp takes over from former Blackburn Rovers and Manchester City manager Mark Hughes, who was sacked day before yesterday after failing to win a single game since the season began in August, despite significant investment in the squad this summer with funds from Rangers owner Tony Fernandes.
The Malaysian businessman bankrolled the signings of several players, including Andy Johnson, Jose Bosingwa, Julio Cesar, Esteban Granero, Junior Hoilett and Manchester United duo Park Ji-Sung and Fabio da Silva (loan).
But the Club find themselves bottom of the table, with just four points from thirteen games played so far.
Redknapp guided North London club Tottenham to a fourth-placed finish in the league last season, but missed out on the Champions League because fellow Londoners Chelsea won the 2011-12 edition of the tournament, earning them an automatic place in year’s premier European competition.
But a fall-out with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy meant Redknapp left White Hart Lane after the end of last season, having being linked to the then vacant England manager’s job for a large part of the second half of last season.
The media speculation surrounding the 65-year-old and the National Team’s job might have been one of the reasons for Spurs’ slump during the tail end of the season. They were on top of arch-rivals Arsenal for a majority of the season and were even considered outside title challengers, with the potential to derail Manchester Clubs City and United.
David Beckham aside, Redknapp is interested in acquiring the services of former charges Peter Crouch, Scott Parker and Jermaine Defoe.
Redknapp was at Beckham’s former stomping ground as Rangers lost 3-1 to Manchester United at Old Trafford. The 37-year-old will play his last game with Major League Soccer LA Galaxy in the MLS Cup final, and has been linked to a host of clubs in Australia and China, in addition to wealthy French side Paris Saint-Germain.
