Top 5 strikers in the MLS right now

Orlando City SC v Los Angeles Galaxy
Zlatan has been bossing the league since his arrival

The Major League Soccer houses a lot of incredible talent. It is a league known for some relentless attacking football and a lot of goals.

The league is a natural habitat for potent goalscorers and strikers. Many of whom go unnoticed due to the footballing world's general fixation on European Football.

The MLS is in full throttle currently with the climax of its league season soon to be upon us. It will then lead into the playoff rounds for the MLS title. A lot of striking names have come up through the season and we've chosen the 5 best in the league currently

#5 Zlatan Ibrahimovich - LA Galaxy

If we didn't put the big Swede's name first on the list, then it would be an utter disregard of the legend himself. Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been a revelation in the United States ever since his move from Manchester United. He dramatically scored a brace on his debut match coming on from the bench earning his side a comeback win.

Zlatan has since shown no signs of slowing down. He has scored 15 goals for the club in 16 appearances while also providing 5 assists. He has been heavily involved in his team's attacking play and has at times, carried the team singlehandedly in typical Zlatan fashion.

His exploits have led LA Galaxy onto the third spot at the time of writing in the Western Conference. They have every chance of going top before the end of the campaign if Zlatan continues to perform. Looking at the Swede's form, there have even been talks of a January return on loan to the Red Devils.

#4 Josef Martinez - Atlanta United

Seattle Sounders v Atlanta United
Martinez (R) has had a record-breaking season

The league's top scorer had to have a place in this list. The Venezuelan striker has been phenomenal this season scoring 27 goals in 25 matches, leading is the team to the top of the Eastern Conference table.

He is at some distance from the runner-up- Bradley Wright Philis who is on 16 goals.

Josef Martinez plays as part of a dual strike partnership with an attacking midfielder, usually Almiron behind him. But the Venezuelan bags nearly all the goals for his club to account for more than 50% of the total goals scored by Atlanta United this season.

27 goals by one player in a single season is a record in the MLS that has stood for 22 seasons. Martinez looks well and truly placed to shatter that record and set one himself that might just be too difficult to break in the future.

#3 Bradley Wright Philips - NY Red Bulls

D.C. United v New York Red Bulls
Another great season in the MLS for Wright Philips

The English striker has been a goal machine for the New York Red Bulls season after season. His current goal tally stands at 16 while he also has provided 6 assists.

Playing as the lone striker, Wright Philips scored his 100th goal in the MLS recently in July. This made him the fastest player to reach that milestone. He also had a record outing in the 2014 season when he played alongside Thierry Henry and matched the record total of 27 goals in the league.

Wright Philips has no doubt become an icon for his club and will be remembered as a great in the MLS for years to come.

#2 Gyasi Zardes - Columbus Crew

Bosnia & Herzegovina v United States
Zardes has been prolific this season

Fifa 18 players might know him from the famous 'The Journey' mode in the game. Fans of the MLS know him as an exciting player who has been living up to his potential this season.

The US-born striker made an impact in his second season in the league (2014) scoring 17 for the LA Galaxy but didn't quite manage to hit the same heights ever since. Zardes did not hit double figures for the succeeding three seasons and managed only 2 goals in the last one.

This season upon his move to the Eastern Conference with Columbus Crew, the striker has rediscovered his goalscoring touch and has already bagged 15 goals. If he continues his form going into the final few games, Zardes might just hit his first 20 goals mark. It will go a long way in re-establishing the once highly promising young star.

#1 David Villa - New York City FC

New York City FC v Los Angeles FC
Villa has been a goal machine in the USA

A player who just cannot ever stop scoring. A former World Cup, Champions League, La Liga winner who has seen and done nearly all in the game. Villa still seems extremely hungry for goals and has had another great season at his club.

Scoring 10 this season might seem a bit lax to his last season's total of 24, but it would be an utter folly to not count Villa among the best strikers in the league. His goal figures for the season would definitely be more had it not been for his injury in the first half of the campaign.

The veteran striker continues to perform year after year with no signs of slowing down. It wouldn't be wrong to expect that the 36-year-old Spaniard would still be around, grabbing goals for his team for some time to come.
