The Young and the Restless is an American television daily soap opera that premiered on CBS on March 26, 1973. The show has long-standing legacy and has kept audiences hooked for decades with its compelling story arcs, plot twists, and character development.
One of the popular storylines is the death of Cassie Newman, portrayed by Camryn Grimes. Cassie was the daughter of Nick Newman and Sharon. On May 24, 2005, Cassie died in a fatal car accident, marking the exit of the character and actor from the show. Camryn Grimes reappeared on the show as Mariah on January 27, 2014, and this return raised the question of whether Cassie was back from death.
However, according to CBS details about Camryn:
"Grimes originated the role of Cassie, Mariah's twin sister."
Thus, the answer is no. Mariah and Cassie are not the same person on The Young and the Restless. However, they are twins portrayed by the same actress.
Mariah was brought back by Victor Newman to haunt his daughter-in-law, Sharon, who had been suffering from hallucinations. She started seeing Mariah and thought she was hallucinating the ghost of her dead daughter Cassie again. But she could touch her, leading her to discover that Mariah was her long-lost twin daughter.
How did Cassie die on The Young and the Restless?
One of the saddest moments of the soap opera was when Cassie Newman died on The Young and the Restless. In 2005, the then-teenaged Cassie opted to drive an intoxicated Daniel Romalotti home from a party, although she didn't have a license. She lost control of the car, leading to a terrible crash.
Daniel survived, but Cassie was severely injured. It started when Cassie seemed to pull through but then took a turn for the worse.
In an emotional hospital scene, Cassie tells her parents, Nick and Sharon, that she loves them. She died, leaving her family heartbroken. The loss caused tension in Nick and Sharon's marriage, and it trickled into the characters' lives.
