Emma Elizabeth Wylie Samuelson, also known as Emma Samms, plays the role of Holly Sutton Scorpio on the ABC soap opera General Hospital. The character of Holly Sutton was first introduced on the show on July 1, 1982, and since then she has been a recurring cast member, appearing in over 300 episodes of General Hospital.
Holly’s role has been entirely played by Emma, except for a few episodes in 2022 when actress Finola Hughes took over the role due to Samms's medical condition. One of the prominent parts of Holly’s storyline on General Hospital is her short-lived relationship with Luke Spencer, while Laura was gone.
Holly has now returned to the town of Port Charles after her exit on May 18, 2023. The first episode of the character after her return aired on September 4, 2024, leaving fans excited to know about her story arc.
Will she be a good girl or a baddie this time?
Emma Samms returns as Holly Sutton on General Hospital
Emma Samms returns to General Hospital in her role as Holly Sutton. The character spent over 15 years on the show before she exited in 2023, and moved to Australia to help Ethan settle his debts.
On July 29, 2024, it was announced that Samms would reprise her role in the first week of September. In a September 3, 2024, interview with Variety, the actress mentioned about her understanding of Holly.
“It’s so fun, and really interesting. It’s that depth, all those different colors that Holly has to her character,” said Samms.
Holly has been a versatile character on General Hospital as there is a soft side to her with the arc of a villain. But will it be the same this time? In the same interview, the actress mentioned that Holly will have “both” good and bad girl energy.
The actress also mentioned that she is working with “a brilliant, strong, powerful, interesting villain now” and that there will be “some interesting twists with Holly coming back to town.”
Parallel to the return of Holly, another much-awaited character Lucky Spencer (played by Jonathan Jackson) has also arrived in Port Charles.
People in the town are looking for him, and meanwhile, Lucky seems to be in trouble with handcuffs on. Holly, after her return, will be sharing the frame with Lucky as they both navigate the problems in Port Charles.
“It’s such a gift that Frank has given me, working with Jonathan, who is, obviously, a very, very good actor,” said Samms.
Samms had to temporarily quit the show due to the diagnosis of COVID. For nearly four and a half years she didn’t leave her hometown in London as the doctors were studying the symptoms of the illness.
“I got some really good scans done and they found that at some point I had had myocarditis, which has scarred my heart,” she said.
Due to the impact of the illness, the actress is facing problems in doing her day-to-day tasks. She has to lie down every now and then put her feet up.
She has been diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome due to which her heart rate increases.
Samms mentioned that working in such conditions was possible with the supportive cast and makers of General Hospital.
“They write most of my scenes sitting down. They’ve put me in a dressing room that’s really close to the elevator.”
Fans of General Hospital can watch the show on ABC.
