ABC's General Hospital, which premiered on American television on April 1, 1963, has kept fans captivated with its storylines and characters. Created by Doris and Frank Hursely, the show is set in the fictional town city of Port Charles. General Hospital revolves around dramatic events and romantic entanglements in the lives of the Corinthos, Quartermaine, Cassadine, and Spencer families.
Recently on General Hospital, Michael Corinthos's character left for Germany to receive proper burn care treated in a special burns ward clinic after he suffered third-degree burns in over 40 percent of his body. This storyline enabled Chad Duell to exit the show after 14 years of being a part of its cast as Michael.
His exit from the show came after Actor Chad Duell mentioned that he would be taking a break for personal reasons.
On January 2, 2025, the General Hospital actor stated in The Daily Drama Podcast that he recently lost his father and needed time to process his grief. The actor prioritized his focus on his partner, baby son, and the rest of his family. He said:
"There’s a few things behind it but one thing I did say is my dad passed away and I’m still coming to terms with that."
He also took to his Instagram handle in November 2024 to announce his exit and thanked the writers and producers of the show for giving him the opportunity to play Michael Corinthos.
However, he also said in the podcast that he is open to making a return to the show in the future and collaborating with Frank Hursley, the producer, again.
"Obviously, with Frank and everything, I left the door open there."
With Duell's character being in Germany, it leaves the possibility of him returning later in the show when his wounds are completely healed. While his treatment is the main priority at the moment, it remains to be seen when the character will return to the storyline.
Recent developments of Michael Corinthos on General Hospital
Michael Corinthos recently was caught up in the fire explosion that took place in the Corinthos mansion. Jason Morgan pulled him out from the fire before the entire structure of the house collapsed on him. Michael was immediately rushed to the hospital where he was looked after by doctors Isaiah and Lucas.
He had been receiving burns treatment in Port Charles when Carly spoke to Jack Brennan to help her open up a spot for him in Germany, where they had a specialized clinic. Eventually, he was taken there by Carly, who settled him in.
While he was admitted to the hospital in Port Charles, he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest after Cyrus Renault had sneaked into the hospital in disguise and tampered with his IV bags, adding an overdose of digitalis. Isaiah responded swiftly to the crisis at hand and administered an unorthodox medication to counter the effect of the digitalis.
Willow Tait, Michael's estranged wife, was given the responsibility of being Michael's medical proxy and misused her power by preventing Sonny and Carly to go and visit their son in the hospital. She barred their entry and mentioned that only if they got back Wiley and Amelia from the Quartermaines would she allow them to meet Michael.
Sonny and Carly were unsuccessful in both their attempts to retrieve the kids but nonetheless, Willow felt guilty and chose to allow them to meet their son. After this, Michael was transferred to Germany's clinic on General Hospital.
Fans and viewers can watch General Hospital on ABC Network and stream episodes on Hulu.
