Sam McCall is slated for a departure from General Hospital in a sad exit plot that sees her dead while trying to be the good Samaritan. The recent story arc found the whole of Port Charles trying to help the comatose Lulu Spencer have a liver transplant. When half-sibling Lucky was not found to be a matching donor, Sam was surprisingly the matching one.
While General Hospital fans are gearing up for the arc where Sam's liver will be donated to Lulu, waking up the latter, the donor will likely be killed off as her exit story. Both Sam and Lulu are considered legacy characters for the soap. As such, the termination of either of their story arcs is likely to leave fans sad.
As a reminder for readers, General Hospital is one of the longest-running American daily soaps airing since April 1963. The plot is set in the fictional place of Port Charles with its titular hospital, its staff, the law enforcers and the mobsters. Lulu, Laura Spencer's daughter and Sam, Alexis Davis's daughter are both small-time crooks-turned-responsible parents and have had long story arcs on the soap.

General Hospital: Current plot dynamics of Sam and Lulu
Lulu Spencer has been in a long coma since 2020 after experiencing a life-threatening bomb explosion. While Laura, Tracy and Dante, along with other Port Charles residents have been taking care of the comatose Spencer girl, doctors found her needing a liver transplant to save her life.
In a bid to save Lulu Spencer, last played by Emme Rylan, her family and others looked for a matching donor. When possible donors in the town were not found a match, an expedition was taken up to bring back her half-sibling, Lucky Spencer, from Africa. However, Lucky was also not a match.

Surprisingly, Sam McCall, played by Kelly Monaco, got tested and was found to be the matching donor. Sam is set to donate part of her liver to Lulu, to save her life. While liver transplants are safe procedures for both the donor and the recipient, this could be the cue story arc for Monaco, who is slated for an exit from the show.
After the operation, there are likely to be some health complications for the donor jeopardizing her life. Alternatively, there could be a sabotage from some villain in the soap leading to Sam's death.
While Soap Opera Network announced her exit plans in August 2024, Sam actor Monaco has reportedly completed filming her final scenes before October this year. Incidentally, October 1, 2024, marked her 21 years on General Hospital.

General Hospital: How will Sam's exit affect the storyline?
As fans know, the show is swapping one popular character for another by letting Sam sacrifice for Lulu's life. With Sam dead, her children Danny and Scout will be devastated and eventually be part of a dysfunctional family. While Dante is sincerely worried about Lulu's well-being, his romance with Sam will receive a rude shock due to her death.
Also, the storyline may be paving the way for a reunion of the former couple, Dante and Lulu. However, how Dante Falconeri might feel about romancing Lulu, now to be played by Alexa Havens, knowing Sam's sacrifice to keep her alive, remains to be seen.
Sam's death marks the end of her future possibilities, meaning she won't marry Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) or reunite with her former lover, Jason Morgan (Steve Burton). This exit also ends opportunities for Kelly Monaco to showcase her talent on the soap. While Sam's mother, Alexis Davis, will be upset, her siblings, Molly and Kristina, may reconcile as they cope with their grief.
