General Hospital and its current storyline has Port Charles abuzz with the aftermath of murder, as Cates is found dead on the Quartermaine property. While viewers know that it was Sonny who shot Cates, many of the characters have no clue about the murderer's identity.
In the latest episode of the soap, viewers see that Molly has her suspicions, but not where they should be. She believes that Kristina was responsible for the murder. She sees Kristina and Michael exchange a look about the gun that Alexis possibly threw off the bridge and starts questioning Kristina.
Molly then has a conversation with TJ that cements her resolve against Kristina. She points out that Kristina had no alibi for the night of the murder and could have even wanted Cates dead. Molly pledges to get to the bottom of the issue and possibly bring Kristina to justice of she is guilty.
Why does Molly suspect Kristina of murdering Cates? General Hospital backstory for the characters explained
Kristina and Molly have been at loggerheads with each other for quite some time before the current storyline on General Hospital. It began when Kristina volunteered to be the surrogate mother for Molly and TJ's child.
As Molly and TJ went through a bit of a rough patch during the pregnancy, Kristina began to wonder whether they were ready to be parents. She started to feel that she should fight for the custody of the child and keep it for herself. Her then-girlfriend Blaze also supported the idea.
The tension between Molly and Kristina increased as the two ramped up towards a looming custody issue. However, before they could go to the courts and even before Kristina's delivery, the plot took a turn.
Kristina met with an accident, falling out of a window into the Metro Court Pool and losing consciousness. She was rescued by paramedics and brought to hospital.
While Kristina sustained no fatal injuries, she miscarried and lost her child. Molly, TJ and Kristina were all heartbroken by that.
Even though Molly initially grieved with Kristina, it soon turned to blame. Molly wanted to know why Kristina went to speak to Ava when she knew of the dangers. She believed that Kristina made a foolish mistake by positioning herself in Ava's room in a way that something could go wrong.
Cates then suggested that Kristina might have done so to escape the custody battle and frame Ava at the same time. Kristina was shocked and angry at the accusation that she might have murdered her baby.
Molly, though, believes that this is Krtistina's motive that fuelled the murder of Cates on General Hospital. Perhaps Molly's resentment and grief towards the surrogate mother of her lost child might be her driving force.
It might have also been that Molly wanted to exonerate the innocent and use Alexis' gun disposal to narrow down the list of suspects to one person. It remains to be seen how Kristina defends herself against these accusations.
