May 24 of every year is an important date for Nick and Sharon Newman in The Young and the Restless. It is when they come together, wherever they both may be at the time, to remember their late daughter Cassie Newman.
While the character has recurrently featured on the show in the dreams and visions of her parents, Cassie met with a tragic fate as a teenager when she passed away after succumbing to her injuries in a car crash.

Cassie was born to Sharon Collins with her then-boyfriend Frank but was given up for adoption since both parents couldn't afford to raise a child at that point. Six years later, Sharon got married to Nick Newman but their friend Grace Turner decided to track down Sharon's baby given up for adoption.
She found Cassie and brought her back to Genoa City. However, Grace decided to raise the child herself without telling Sharon.
A year later, Sharon found out the truth as Grace tried to run away with Cassie, but the young girl was rescued. Sharon decided to raise her daughter, and Nick adopted her, making her part of the Newman family.
As Cassie grew into her teens, she tried to make friends with older teens like Lily Winters, Sierra Hoffman, Devon Hamilton, and Colleen Carlton. She even had a crush on Daniel Romalotti.
But the older kids didn't think she was mature enough, making Cassie bunk classes. She even sneaked out to a party one night and decided to drive a drunk Daniel home.
Unfortunately, Cassie crashed while driving the car and injured both herself and Daniel, with her sustaining severe injuries. She was brought to the hospital by her father Nick, and succumbed to her injuries with both parents at her bedside.

Yes, Cassie and Mariah are played by the same actress: Camryn Grimes. She originally took on the role of Cassie as a preteen in The Young and the Restless, a role she essayed from 1997 to 2005.
