On the ABC soap opera General Hospital, Adam J. Harrington played the role of John “Jagger” Cates. The character was first introduced on the show after arriving in Port Charles in 1992. From 1992 to 1995 and a short while in 2008, the character was played by actor Antonio Sabato Jr., and Adam took over in February 2024 when the character returned to the town.
Adam joined the cast of General Hospital as Detective Jagger Cates on February 2, 2024. Still, his journey on the show didn’t last for long as on the episode aired on August 30, 2024, the character was killed by the mob kingpin Sonny Corinthos. As Jagger was after Sonny and wanted him convicted for his crimes, the tiff between the two men resulted in Sonny shooting Adam.
In a September 6, 2024, interview with Michael Faiman Channel on YouTube, the actor opened up about several things from the beginning of his journey to its end. He mentioned that one of his friends first gave him the hint of his character being written off.
“Listen, just so you know, two things are going to happen. Either half the town goes to prison, or you’re going bye-bye,” Adam quoted his friend.
General Hospital: End of Adam’s journey on the show
Adam J. Harrington, known for portraying Jagger Cates on General Hospital, shared in the Michael Faiman Channel interview that he received the official information of his exit in May 2024. However, the actor also said that he knew the end of his character was coming soon, but the question was how it would take place.
“So you bring in an FBI agent, two things are going to happen. People are going to go to jail, and/or he disappears, right?” said Adam.
In the last episodes of Jagger Cates, viewers saw the confrontation between Jagger and Sonny, resulting in the character’s death. Adam’s primary concern was:
“How do we get the audience to buy into the conceit that an FBI agent would show up without a gun?”
Other than this, the actor also had concerns over the future of his on-screen son, Stone Cates.
Adam also mentioned that Cates’ storyline changed a lot due to multiple writer changes on the show. Three different writing teams came in quickly, each bringing their ideas and altering the character’s direction.
“Every time a new writing team comes in, they’re going to want to put their own stamp on it,” said Harrington.
Adam Harrington’s final scenes on General Hospital were intense and emotional, as Sonny shot his character, Cates, and left him lying in the rain. While talking about the shooting of these visuals, Adam shared how everything was sweet but bitter at the same time because it was the day before the show went on hiatus.
“The shooting was filmed on a Wednesday, and on Thursday, I was partly laying on the ground, soaking wet with rain going up my nose,” said Adam.
He added:
“It was a really intense day… I had 70 pages of dialogue to do that day.”
He recalled how his co-stars, crew members, and producers supported him during all the pressure. He mentioned how he had a long hug with Maurice Benard (who plays Sonny Corinthos) right after they cut the last scene.
“Then, we all had a big, and really sweet hug-fest at the end. I jokingly said, ‘It was my time at soap opera school,’ because it was kind of a semester,” said Adam.
