Robert Gossett began his journey with General Hospital on October 18, 2021, when he played the role of Marshall Ashford, Curtis Ashford's lost father. His initial character shrouded in mystery, sparked much curiosity when he entered Curtis's life as a covert observer. He soon became part of other family members' lives.

In November 2021, viewers finally witnessed the great reveal of Marshall's true identity, which added levels to the family dynamics. Curtis started questioning why his father had so readily faked his death and why he preferred to be away for such a long time. In addition, time was devoted to Marshall's struggles, including his mental health.

His final diagnosis of schizophrenia sat as a big part of his character's arc and produced many emotional moments in 2022. This included occasions like Marshall's bond with Curtis and their reconciliation after many years of separation.

In 2023, Marshall's story was awakened again by the revelation that he was incorrectly diagnosed with schizophrenia 40 years ago. This came with immense relief and regret at the same time.

Throughout the year, Marshall approached closeness to his family. He played a special part in Curtis's and Portia's wedding by performing a clarinet solo during their reception. In 2024, that storyline continued when Marshall began contemplating his years under false diagnosis and seeking answers from his past.

His musical talents were recognized in this development when a promoter invited him to tour with the renowned trumpeter Wynton Marsalis in September 2024, a milestone in his journey at General Hospital.
