While his work on Days of Our Lives is the first time the actor has worked in a soap opera, Dick Van Dyke has had an extensive career in theater and on the screen prior to that.
He gained early recognition as a comedian, performing as part of the duo "Eric and Van - The Merry Mutes" in 1947, and gained considerable renown for his role in the Broadway production Bye Bye Birdie. For his 98th birthday, CBS aired a special on his life, called Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic.
98 years old Dick Van Dyke played Timothy Robicheaux on Days of Our Lives
Dick Van Dyke joined the cast of Days of Our Lives in 2023 and was introduced as Timothy Robicheaux, the biological father of John Black and the long-lost husband of the late Maude Robicheaux.
Timothy was admitted into Salem University Hospital as an amnesiac John Doe. He initially remembered nothing about his past, only that he had a son he wanted to find.
He then met Doug and Julie Williams, and Julie told him that her uncle, Tommy Horton, was a man who fought and died in the Korean War, which stirred up some memories within Timothy.
By this time, John Black had gone through his own struggles in locating his long-lost father. In 2016, he discovered a man going by the alias of Yo Ling, and Ling pretended to be John Black's father in order to make him do his bidding.
John refused his manipulations, and Yo Ling was later captured and he killed himself in custody. The only clues that remained in John's possession were dog tags belonging to a man named Joseph Bell.
On the September 8, 2023 episode, John Black met with the amnesiac "John Doe" and showed him Joseph Bell's dog tags, which made John remember his past.
Joseph Bell was once a United States soldier who fought alongside Tim Robicheux in the Korean War. He had exchanged Tim's dog tags and left him to die while they were in a foxhole together.
Joseph had then taken the alias of Yo Ling, and tried to dupe John Black into believing he was Tim Robicheaux, while the real Tim had been suffering from amnesia.
His memory restored, Tim was relieved to be united with his son at long last but also disheartened to learn that his wife Maude Robicheaux had passed away.
Dick Van Dyke has had a long acting career
Dick Van Dyke has had a decades-spanning career outside of his role in Days of Our Lives. He became a well-known actor on Broadway and Hollywood through his performances in the 1960s on Bye Bye Birdie, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
His career continued to gain prominence in the 1970s through his performances on Columbo, The Carol Burnett Show, and The New Dick Van Dyke Show.
In 1993, he'd bagged one of his longest leading roles in the crime drama Diagnosis: Murder. He played the forensic medical specialist Dr. Mark Sloan, who worked with the homicide detective Steve, played by his real-life son Barry Van Dyke.
Dick Van Dyke was also consulted for the Marvel Cinematic Universe series WandaVision, which sought to emulate the feel of The Dick Van Dyke Show.
Days of Our Lives airs on weekdays at 6 am ET on Peacock.
