Jason Morgan first made an appearance on General Hospital in 1981, played by child actor Quinn Carlson. Going by the timeline of the character's presence in the soap, Jason is about 43 years old. Jason, one half of a twin by Susan Moore, has Alan Quartermaine as his biological father and Monica Quartermaine as the adoptive mother.
Various actors have played Jason on General Hospital, but Emmy-winner Steve Burton has spent the longest time in the role. Between 2014 and 2017, the character was recast with Billy Miller due to Steve crossing over to The Young and the Restless.
However, when Steve returns, Billy's character is retconned as Jason's estranged twin, Drew Cain. Starting in 1991 with intermittent gaps, Steve Burton continues to play Jason Morgan in the soap.
General Hospital: A look at Jason's history in the soap
Born out of wedlock as his parents had an affair, Jason was brought to Port Charles when his mother returned with him and told no one about having twins. Moving into the Quartermaine mansion after his mother's death, he was reluctantly accepted by his stepmother, Monica.
However, with AJ struggling with alcoholism, Jason became the family favorite as per the General Hospital storyline. He even supported Monica during her fight with breast cancer.
Memory loss after an accident caused by AJ led him to hate all of Quartermaine and adopt his grandmother Lila Quartermaine's maiden name. As such, he changed his identity from Jason Quartermaine to Jason Morgan and has remained the same since. His on-and-off affair with Robin led him to Sonny Corinthos and the world of mobsters.
Many of Jason's romantic relationships have been formed out of altruism. Jason stepped in to pretend to be the baby's father when Carly got pregnant with Michael and later formed a loving relationship with the growing baby, besides having a brief affair with Carly. He provided a friendly shoulder to Elizabeth Webber after Lucky was presumed dead, and they came close. He even shares a son, Jake, with her, though Lucky is accepted as the father.
His marriage with Brenda Barrett was meant to stop each from testifying against the other. Moreover, his marriage with Courtney did not last long because of his involvement with the mob world. He again pretended to be Sam McCall's partner when she was carrying Sonny's baby and developed a rapport with her. He later married her, and they had a son, Danny, despite evil Franco's interference during his honeymoon.
Jason survived being hit and kept hostage in Russia before returning to town in 2017 to find his other twin taking over most of his roles in Port Charles including collaborating with Sonny and marrying Sam. During all this time the real Jason stayed in a Russian facility as Patient Six and was helped out of captivity by Ava.
In the General Hospital storyline, Jason returned to helping all his friends. Together, he and Sam brought Shiloh to justice and, with Sonny and Brando, to bring down Cyrus. In prison for Franco's murder, his escape was orchestrated by Carly and Britt. However, Britt's romantic interest in him ends when Jason marries Carly.
Jason and Drew fought Peter in Cassadine Island before Jason, played by Steve Burton, presumably died after a tunnel collapse.
What are the current plot dynamics for Jason on General Hospital?
In March 2024, General Hospital found Jason in the town secretly working for the FBI as forced by Detective Cates. However, he kept helping his friends behind the FBI's back. Danny, Michael, and Willow were in the loop as they helped him recover from his gunshot wounds, while Jake was unhappy that no one let him know his father was alive.
Again, while Sonny is surprised to know Jason works for the FBI, Sam is unhappy that Danny is secretly helping his father. He kept the FBI off Carly while he helped Anna warn Valentin about the FBI coming for him.
As of September 2024, Port Charles is working towards solving Lulu's health issue while looking out for Lucky. On September 13, 2024, Jason left for Africa with Sidwell's location coordinates to get Lucky back. He finds Anna aboard the same flight to the same destination.
Watch out for Jason's upcoming action on General Hospital as the 43-year-old mobster-turned-FBI tries to save a few more lives in Port Charles.
