Marlena Evans has had a turbulent character arc on Days of Our Lives

Marlena Evans has undergone one of the most turbulent character arcs on Days of Our Lives, involving demonic possession and being on the receiving end of malevolent schemes by her lookalike, Hattie Adams.

Marlena has been possessed by the devil on two separate occasions, once in 1995 and again in 2021. The first possession arc brought a lot of attention and controversy to Days of Our Lives, as it marked a sharp departure from the relatively topical and realistic storylines the soap had been known for till then.

Marlena's possession was enabled by the actions of Stefano DiMera, who brainwashed her into falling in love with him by using drugs and hypnosis. As a consequence, the devil would eventually invade her home and forcibly take control of her, something that eventually resulted in her targeting the clergyman John Black under the devil's influence.

After John successfully overpowered the devil and sent it back to hell, Marlena would face further conflicts with her envious lookalike, Hattie Adams.

Hattie's life was defined by her resemblance to Marlena, causing her to scheme to overtake Marlena's life on numerous occasions. This would eventually culminate in Marlena herself getting institutionalized as a result of a scheme by Hattie and Anjelica Deveraux.

In 2021, Marlena would go on to suffer a demonic possession plotline once again, where the devil first possessed Doug Williams and revealed himself to Marlena while she was consulting with him as his psychiatrist.

The devil taunted Marlena and demanded that she let him back in again, and she tried to refuse. In retaliation, he began torturing Doug to coerce her into compliance, which she eventually did.

The devil's new plans with Marlena involved convincing Ben Weston to have a child so that he could be used in a nefarious scheme down the line.
