Dex Heller, a young rookie cop on General Hospital, transformed his life from being a mercenary to becoming a dependable law enforcer at PCPD. Evan Hofer, who played Dex, discussed his departure in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, published on December 13, 2024. The actor reflected on his two-year stay on the show and shared his emotions about leaving.

Here's a quick recap for General Hospital fans. The long-running ABC daily soap, which premiered in April 1963, focuses on the titular medical facility in the fictional Port Charles town. The storyline extends to include residents of the township, including mobsters and law enforcers, besides the hospital's staff.

In his interview with EW, Hofer revealed that he found out about his exit just a few weeks before filming his exit sequence. Despite the short notice, he was excited to know how the story of the lovable character was going to be panning out.

"So my last few weeks were really just trying to soak in how much I loved playing Dex, and how much I loved all the people over at GH," he added.

The actor claimed to have had a wonderful time on the show and wanted to do justice to the character's final scenes.

General Hospital's Evan Hofer spoke on his experience while on the show

Evan Hofer expressed no displeasure about his departure, as he felt he was able to give closure to the character's existence on the soap. He shared that he was always excited to read scripts, adding:

"I was just dying to hear how the story would go, and getting to put a bookend on it is a really rare thing in any job, to actually get to wrap up a character arc."

While speaking to EW, Hofer reminisced about his interaction with some of the General Hospital stars. He accepted that the audience is likely to be crushed about Josslyn losing Dex for good. Hofer explained how Joss, played by Eden McCoy, was a significant influence in Dex's life.

"I think his relationship with Josslyn was really what impacted Dex most in trying to get his life together, getting out of the mob, becoming the police officer, and realizing he never thought that he deserved anything good out of his life," he stated.

Speaking about co-star Maurice Bernard, who plays Sonny Corinthos, Hofer expressed that he would miss working with the veteran actor. He praised Maurice's warmth and shared he felt fortunate to have him as a co-actor. Moreover, he praised actor Chad Duell, who plays Michael Corinthos, calling him "an incredible actor."

General Hospital: Dex meets an unexpected end on the soap

For General Hospital fans unaware of the current plot dynamics involving the young cop, Hofer's Dex Heller was recently stabbed in the back. The incident occurred after Dex and his colleague Lauren Jackson broke up a drunken scuffle. Dex later went into a deserted alley to dispose of confiscated alcohol when an unknown assailant, dressed in a dark jacket and gloves, attacked him from behind.

Although he went through a successful surgery and was on the road to recovery, he had a sudden cardiac arrest that ended his life. This unprecedented demise of the healthy young man suggests possible foul play.

Viewers may remember, before his stabbing, Dex met reformed criminal Cyrus Renault at Rice Plaza. Dex questioned his presence at the hospital during Halloween. While the ex-mobster assured the cop he wasn't there to see his niece, Lulu Spencer, he did not explain the real reason.

However, the audience knows that Cyrus was at the hospital to push Digitalis into Sam McCall's IV bag, killing her. As such, Dex would have put two and two together soon and reached this conclusion. If the cop realized Cyrus's criminal activity, the ex-criminal would be behind bars again.

As such, Cyrus needed to silence Dex. However, the story is yet to unfold, explaining the cause behind Dex's untimely demise. Stay tuned to ABC every weekday to catch more on the cop's death on General Hospital.
