General Hospital has launched the careers of many actors who've gone on to become household names. One such actor is John Stamos, who got early recognition for playing the character of Blackie Parrish on the soap opera from 1982-1984. Stamos would go on to get mainstream recognition for his role in the ABC sitcom Full House.
While Blackie Parrish hasn't been seen on the soap for some time, an Instagram post made by Stamos on June 25, 2024, reignited speculation about his potential return to the soap as Blackie. As of writing, this is just speculation, though, as there hasn't been any official confirmation.
The post shares a rare scene from the soap's 1992 run where John Stamos reappears on the show, not as Blackie Parrish, but as himself.
Upon spotting him, Scott Baldwin, played by Kin Shriner, immediately gets starstruck and breaks the fourth wall by saying he's been a fan since John Stamos played Blackie in the soap.
John Stamos' post about General Hospital reignites speculation
On June 26, 2024, John Stamos reminisced about his time at General Hospital in an Instagram post, with the caption stating:
“I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again -without General Hospital I’d probably still be flipping burgers at my dad‘s restaurant. I’m so grateful to the cast, crew and my good friends that were great mentors and great teachers. God bless General Hospital!”
John Stamos had his acting breakthrough when he played Blackie Parrish on the soap. In the Instagram clip he shared, Kin Shriner's character, Scott Baldwin, becomes starstruck after seeing John Stamos at a restaurant.
He takes his obsession to extremes by trying to touch John Stamos's hair while he's on the phone. Right as Stamos is trying to leave, he introduces him to his friends, Dominique and Julia, and tries to take a picture with him.
There's some real-life subtext to this scene as well. John Stamos and Kin Shriner are good friends offscreen and have collaborated on multiple projects besides General Hospital. Kin Shriner appeared in season 4 of Full House where he played a cop who arrests Jesse Katsopolis, Stamos's character, on his wedding day.
The two have worked together while Stamos tours with The Beach Boys as a drummer. Furthermore, Kin Shriner has an Instagram comedy show he co-hosts with General Hospital alum Marcus Coloma called 2 Dicks, where John Stamos has made a guest appearance.
Blackie Parrish appeared on General Hospital from 1982-1984
Blackie Parrish appeared on the soap opera in 1982 as a street kid who's adopted by Leslie Webber and Rick Webber.
When Rick forms a Community Sports Center to give wayward children better opportunities in Port Charles, Blackie begins taking steps towards a music career and forms the band, Blackie and the Riff Raff, where he's the drummer.
Blackie's music career takes a dark turn when he crumbles under pressure to come up with a hit song and develops writer's block. As a consequence, he plagiarizes music from Josh Clayton, the hotel bellboy. Lou Swanson, his girlfriend, finds out and confronts him with Josh's mixtape.
Things go tragically awry when Blackie's manager has a scuffle with Lou over the tape, causing Lou to hit her head and die. Blackie is charged with manslaughter and sentenced to two years in prison as a result.
Despite being released from prison offscreen since then, Blackie Parrish is yet to return to General Hospital. However, John Stamos has made his appreciation for the soap crystal clear, so anything is possible. The soap airs on ABC.
