Days of Our Lives, the iconic American television soap opera, has captivated audiences since it first aired in 1965, making it one of the longest-running daytime dramas of all time. The show has been going on for 56 seasons now, and it's seen a lot of changes, like new storylines and characters coming and going.

Even though Days of Our Lives is the third-oldest show on NBC/Peacock, it won't end anytime soon. The show has been extended until 2025, so fans can keep enjoying the drama of Salem for a while longer, even though we're not sure what's next after this season.

Days of Our Lives' longevity and continuing popularity suggest that its journey into the future is far from over, although the exact path it will take remains unknown.

Current status of Days of Our Lives renewal

Days of Our Lives has been renewed for two more seasons by Peacock, taking the iconic soap opera through its 60th season. The show, which previously aired on NBC for 57 years, moved to Peacock in September 2022. This new two-year deal for seasons 59 and 60 represents a much quicker and quieter renewal process than in recent years, when negotiations between NBC and Sony Pictures Television (the series' distributor) often ended in deadlock.

The switch to Peacock amped up the excitement at NBCUniversal. Peacock has said that the show always ranks in the top 10 on their platform. The show is still doing great on Peacock, so they decided to renew it.

NBC and Peacock executive Michael Sluchan told Soap Hub,

"We are thrilled with the [show's] performance. The viewers really did show up, and they moved over to Peacock. [The show] continues to be a top performer, and we're very much behind [it]."

The show has racked up 61 Daytime Emmy Awards over the years, snagging one for outstanding writing in 2022. It's also received many People's Choice Awards, GLAAD Media Awards, and Prism Awards along the way.

The longevity and uncertainty surrounding Days of Our Lives

This soap is a remarkable example of the longevity of daytime television, which has adapted to changing viewer tastes and industry challenges since its inception. Created by Corday and William J. Bell, the series was notable for its combination of family narratives and medical subjects from the beginning, gaining acclaim for its realistic portrayal of modern American families.

In the 1970s, the soap dove into controversial topics like artificial insemination and interracial relationships, making a big impact on pop culture. Then in the 90s, they switched things up with some supernatural storylines that ended up bringing in a younger crowd and making more money.

But as the late 90s rolled around, ratings started to drop, leaving NBC scrambling to decide if they should keep the show going. The show tried to make some changes with the 2011 reboot, but people had mixed feelings about it. In recent years, the show has dealt with issues like production delays because of COVID-19.
