Evan Hofer portrayed Dex Heller, a character who had been part of General Hospital for about two years. Dex was established as Josslyn Jacks' romantic partner and a good friend of Molly, Chase, and Dante. However, as per recent plot dynamics, Dex exited the soap due to a fatal cardiac arrest, despite being on the path to recovery after his recent attack.
Dex Heller was a much-loved character on General Hospital, and his departure was unexpected. His recent friendship with Molly, as he offered support to the grieving Lansing, had sparked speculation about a potential love triangle between Dex, Joss, and Molly. However, his sudden exit opens up a new story arc about the investigation into his death.
Longtime General Hospital fans know that the ABC soap often has characters moving in and out of the storyline. The long-running soap, which premiered in April 1963, presents the lives of the residents of the fictional Port Charles town and the functioning of the titular hospital.
General Hospital: How did Dex's recent story arc cause his death?
Dex Heller had been dedicated to his duties ever since the Army vet joined PCPD. As a rookie cop, he was often assigned routine patrols. During one such patrol at Rice Plaza, he met the former criminal Cyrus Renault.
The cop enquired Cyrus about his presence at the hospital during Halloween. Cyrus assured Dex that he was not visiting his niece, Lulu, due to restraining orders. However, he did not explain the true reason for showing up at the hospital.
In the General Hospital episode that aired on December 10, 2024, Dex was patrolling with his colleague Lauren Jackson when a group of drunk footballers entered the arena and started a scuffle.
Dex and Lauren broke off the fight, and Lauren escorted the players from the area. Meanwhile, Dex went into the back alley to empty the confiscated bottles of alcohol in a trashcan. While he was absorbed in this work, someone stabbed him in the back, and Dex collapsed. Lauren arranged to get Dex to the hospital where the cop went through surgery.
Before the operation, Dex informed his co-worker Harrison Chase about the incident, sending him off for investigation. Despite a successful surgery, Friday's General Hospital episode found Dex having a cardiac arrest that led to his demise. Dr. Gannon and the nurses used paddles to resuscitate him. However, the doctor informed Joss that they lost Dex.

What is the significance of Dex's demise on General Hospital?
Dex's stabbing was fairly mild, as the audience was informed, and the cop looked in good health on the way to recovery, wishing to spend time with his girlfriend, Josslyn Jacks. However, unexpectedly, he suffered a fatal cardiac arrest with no prior warning, which suggests foul play.
General Hospital fans may recall Dex questioning Cyrus Renault about being at the hospital when Cyrus claimed he had not gone near Lulu's room. Cyrus knew that the smart cop would soon have put the timing of spotting Cyrus and Sam's death together. This would have exposed Cyrus as the audience knows he killed Sam McCall using digitalis.
Ex-criminal Cyrus would want to silence Dex Heller for his own safety. While he was not shown stabbing Dex, he was wearing a black leather jacket, just like that of the assailant who attacked Dex in the alley. Again, Dex's mild injury and excellent recovery do not explain the sudden heart arrest.
There is a possibility that Cyrus killed Dex using the same methods he successfully used against Sam. As nurse Elizabeth pointed out, there was something wrong happening at the hospital, including Cyrus having digitalis, a high-security prescription drug.
Dex's death may be Cyrus's undoing if the investigating officers look for the loopholes in the well-executed plot. Stay tuned to ABC to catch the upcoming episodes of General Hospital.
