General Hospital: Martin Grey returns to Port Charles
Michael E. Knight, who plays Martin Grey, revealed that his break from General Hospital was supposed to be just three months when he left the show in February 2024, but due to the changes in the show's writing team, this short break ended up as a long vacation. This long break also led to Knight being skeptical about his return to Port Charles.
“By the time it got to August, I was thinking, ‘Okay, well, you know, no harm, no foul,’” Knight told the aforementioned publication.
However, the actor has also been grateful for whatever time he got to spend on the show, playing the character of Martin and getting closer to his fans.
“I will love Frank for the rest of my life for doing what he did, because four days [of GH work] turned into four years,” he said.
“So, to me, I already had the brass ring in my pocket. I wasn’t going to complain about four days turning into four years! I’m one grateful monkey, you know what I mean?” said the actor while hinting at his debut which was once supposed to be for a short duration.
Fortunate for fans who were waiting for the character to return to General Hospital, the new writing team, led by Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten, brought Martin Grey back into the story.
Knight's connections with executive producer Frank Valentini were important in his return to Port Charles. He said that Valentini first hired him for a short time to help him meet his health insurance work requirement. But what began as a short four-day job soon turned into a four-year role.
When Valentini called him to discuss bringing Martin back, Knight described himself as “a very happy guy.”
Knight didn't share much details about Martin's upcoming storylines, but he suggested that his character will be important in the upcoming events.
“It’s kind of like paprika. You don’t use it a lot but you use it to sort of spice things up,” said Knight while hinting at the significance of his role.
Knight also expressed his excitement about working again with his co-stars, like Maurice Benard (Sonny) and Genie Francis (Laura). With his character coming back to the main story, fans can look forward to more in Port Charles.
