In a shocking twist that has left fans stunned, General Hospital said goodbye to one of its most iconic characters, Sam McCall, who has been played by Kelly Monaco for over two decades. The episode on October 30, 2024, witnessed the character embarking on her final journey after agreeing to bravely donate her liver to Lulu Spencer.

It was a shocking exit for both the actress and fans as Kelly Monaco was said to be blindsided by the creative team's choice to write her character out so definitively. For years, Sam has been at the center of most of Port Charles' memorable storylines, including her tumultuous relationship with Jason Morgan and her courageous battles against myriad villains.

Fans were quick to inundate social media with statements showing their disappointment and frustration against the General Hospital writers. The majority of fans questioned why a character that became such a staple in the show was written out.

"As a person who has watched GH for 35 years, I can honestly say that I am very, very disappointed with GH writers on how they handle Sam's character the last couple years as well as her death today.", wrote a fan on General Hospital's official Facebook group.

They further added:

"This character deserved better. A character, who had a major impact on the show for over 20 years, who should have went out in a blaze of glory, went out in a whimper. It is disrespectful that the GH writers, executives and ABC did this to Kelly Monaco and the character of Sam McCall."

He ended the comment by saying:

"Her character deserved a way better ending than this and that's all I'm saying. I understand business is business and all that good stuff...but Sam deserved better than this."

Farewell to Sam McCall: An iconic character’s heartbreaking exit on General Hospital

The end of an era has finally come to General Hospital, and the fans are in mourning at the tragic loss of Sam McCall. After the emotional goodbye on October 24, 2024, Sam was taken to surgery, as she was donating part of her liver to Lulu Spencer.

She had to bid goodbye to all of her loved ones: Alexis, Dante, and Jason. She attempted to be strong since breakage was written all over her face. The scene where she was wheeled into the operating room, fighting tears at the time, was very poignant.

When Sam resumed filming on October 30, 2024, the surgery was declared a success. Her surgeon confirmed that she celebrated a good recovery by getting engaged to Dante, a cheerful highlight that soon turned sour with tragedy as she abruptly went into decline.

Her brother left to proclaim her time of death, leaving fans stunned by the unexpected and final goodbye to one of Port Charles' most dearly loved characters. Kelly Monaco's Sam will forever be ingrained in television history.

Since first seeing the actress on-screen three years ago, she gave the character of Sam enough strength, resilience, and depth to warrant a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress with a Daytime Emmy in 2006.
