What happened to Anna Devane on General Hospital? Explained

Anna Devane is a longtime character on General Hospital, portrayed by actress Finola Hughes. Interestingly, the character has been linked to another soap, All My Children, and even made an appearance in the spinoff General Hospital: Night Shift. Hughes has played Anna since the character's inception. However, actress Camila More briefly played the role between 1991 and 1992.

Anna first appeared on General Hospital in April 1985 as a super spy. She also had prominent relationships on the show, including her pairings with Robert Scorpio and former mobster Duke Lavery. Both of these relationships ended up becoming super couples in the show's history.

What are Anna Devane's past storylines on General Hospital?

Anna was introduced on General Hospital in 1985 as Robert Scorpio's ex-wife. It was soon revealed that she was a double-agent spy working for DVX. During a mission, Anna came across an old friend, Filomena Soltini, only to realize that she had been raising Anna and Robert's daughter, Robin, pretending the girl was her own child. Robin was then rescued by her parents.

Soon, Anna was named co-police chief along with Burt Ramsey and started having feelings for the mysterious Duke Lavery. The two even got engaged, but a shocking truth was revealed just before their wedding. Duke was exposed for covering up the murder of Evan Jerome.

Even though she left him briefly after the revelation, Anna ended up marrying Duke in 1987. However, tragedy befalls the couple when Anna suffers a miscarriage because of a jealous Olivia St. John, who was Victor Jerome’s daughter. In 1989, Duke was presumed to be dead in a fire, a rumor that was quickly dismissed. Unfortunately, he was shot by Julian Jerome minutes before he could reunite with Anna.

By 1991, Robert and Anna began to mend their rift and revisit their feelings for one another. They married each other in June of the same year. Anna was presumed to be dead in 1992, along with Robert, after a boat explosion. She returned to town alive in 2001, but alone.

Anna then had a romance and marriage with David, and she got pregnant with his child. However, she learned that her baby had a heart defect and needed surgery upon birth. Anna gave birth to a baby girl, Leora, but the infant's condition kept getting worse. In the end, Leora does not survive, which results in a tough time for Anna and David.

Later, Anna discovered that Robert was also alive and involved in a jewelry heist with Luke Spencer and Holly Sutton. Meanwhile, Anna focused more on developing her equation with her daughter, Robin, and she soon became a grandmother to Robin's daughter, Emma.
