Brad Carlton was introduced on The Young and The Restless on April 8, 1985. He worked as a gardener for the Abbott family and developed a romantic relationship with Traci Abbott.

Brad married Traci in 1986, but their marriage ended in a divorce in 1989 due to misunderstandings and infidelity. Brad was later tricked into marrying Cassandra Rawlins. Cassandra died in a car accident in 1991, and Brad became a suspect. However, he was found to be innocent, and he inherited all her wealth.

Brad left Genoa City in 1996 and returned in 1998 as a wealthy businessman. He married Traci's sister, Ashley Abbott, in 2000. However, their marriage became tumultuous when Brad discovered that Ashley had used Victor

Newman's stored sperm to get pregnant. Ashley gave birth to Abby Newman in November 2000. Brad forgave Ashley and adopted Abby. Brad and Ashley divorced in 2006 due to personal and business tragedies, including the stillbirth of their son, Robert Carlton, in 2003.

Brad's corporate ambitions often made him act in unethical ways. He was in conflict with both Jack Abbott and Victor Newman. Brad worked at Jabot Cosmetics and Newman Enterprises and often used unethical ways to reach higher positions.

Brad married Victoria Newman in 2006, but their marriage ended due to infidelity and misunderstandings in 2007.

Brad's true identity was discovered in 2006 when he was sought out by his mother, Rebecca Kaplan, to help recover an ancient artifact. Brad was born as George Kaplan to Arthur Kaplan and Rebecca Kaplan.

Rebecca was a holocaust survivor who testified against war criminals. Due to her testimony, she received threats and hence moved to the United States with her family for safety.

Unfortunately, Arthur and Brad's sister, Stephanie Kaplan, was killed by individuals who sought revenge against Rebecca. This tragedy caused Brad to adopt the identity of his deceased friend, Brad Carlton.

On February 5, 2009, Brad drowned in a frozen lake after rescuing Noah Newman. His passing was grieved by his family. Brad appeared posthumously to comfort his daughter, Colleen, when she drowned in the same frozen lake.
