After months of absence, Cyrus Renault returned to General Hospital, albeit a changed man, on August 20, 2024. His last major presence was when Sonny beat him. However, he had refused to report the attack despite Laura advising him on that. His turn-over into a better man had started months ago when he claimed God saved him and gave him a second chance. As such, the soap may have lost a supervillain in this process.
Played by septuagenarian actor Jeff Kober, Cyrus was a more recent addition to the long-running soap on ABC. However, the talented actor made quite an impression in the negative role of the antagonist to Sonny Corinthos. Kober's Cyrus was not in the regular cast and appeared in a recurring role. This allowed Kober to pursue other projects besides General Hospital. The actor received a Daytime Emmy Award for his portrayal.
General Hospital: A quick look at Cyrus Renault
Portrayed by Jeff Kober, Cyrus debuted on General Hospital in 2020 as the mob boss who challenged Sonny's business. Introduced as a Pentonville inmate, Cyrus attacked Sonny in Brooklyn using his gunmen. He had Michael Corinthos attacked at the same time. When his gunmen attacked Carly in Corinthos' warehouse, she was saved by Brando Corbin.
The hardcore drug dealer was running his business from inside the prison and wanted to include Port Charles among his operating zones. Sonny visited him in Pentonville and warned him. Sonny even turned down the offer by Cyrus to share profits.
Under Sonny's instructions, Jason blew up one of Cyrus' warehouses. The villain, on the other hand, was the reason behind Officer Marcus Taggart's death. He also had Cameron and Trina abducted. When Mayor Laura had him shifted to a solitary cell to stop him from running his business from the prison, he had TJ Ashford abducted in answer.
Using TJ, he blackmailed Officer Jordan to release him and allow him to do business in Port Charles. While no one was misled by his bluff as a businessman, his huge donation to the hospital gave him the authority to fire Monica and Bobbie.
When Cyrus caused the bomb explosion at the Floating Rib killing Dustin and Dev and seriously injuring Lulu, the truth about his remaining family was revealed. Residents of Port Charles learned that Martin Grey was his brother and Mayor Laura was his sister.
Cyrus tried to take over Sonny's territory when Sonny was presumed dead. However, Carly fought against him. First, she used Cyrus's mother Florence as leverage, and later she took control of the Corinthos empire after Nikolas Cassadine freed Florence.
Next, while testing Brando's loyalty, he shoots Gladys. However, during an exchange deal with Carly, Jason shoots him. While an injured Cyrus tried to take Portia and Trina hostage, Laura exchanged them for herself. Again shot by Jordan, he was taken into custody.
Despite trying to hurt her, Cyrus was surprised to find Laura forgiving him. As he claimed to his sister, he was turning into a religious person. He befriended and helped Spencer during his stay at Pentonville. His old acquaintance, Drew threatened him but later saved him after a heart attack.
He manipulated Austin to get him out of prison along with his sidekick, Mason. However, he was disappointed when Mason tried to kill Ava instead of just kidnapping her as instructed by Cyrus. Throughout this time, he insisted on having God as his guide. No one except Laura was ready to trust him.
On the episode of General Hospital, dated January 4, 2024, Sonny was found praying in the church after learning about Nina's role in tipping off SEC. Cyrus approached him and approved of his spiritual act. A frustrated Sonny hit Cyrus, who in return quoted the Bible. This enraged Sonny more and he kept hitting Cyrus while the latter declared he forgave Sonny.
When Laura asked Cyrus to take up Sonny's actions with the authorities, Cyrus refused. He maintained that he was turning pious with the second chance God gave him.
What was the recent appearance of Cyrus on General Hospital?
The General Hospital episode dated August 20, 2024, saw Laura visiting a comatose Lulu at the hospital. She was taken aback to find Cyrus with a Bible, next to the unconscious Lulu. When asked, Cyrus explained that he had been coming to read the Bible to Lulu quite often.
Laura complained that she hadn't heard from him for months and he apologized for that. While he offered to stop visiting if it offended Laura, Laura assured him about appreciating his intentions. Cyrus informed her that he does the same to many other patients in the hospital. He left when Laura and Kevin discussed their daughter.
Cyrus's return as a religious and pious man seems to be a huge shift from the drug dealing crook he started as on the soap. Continue watching General Hospital to know whether Cyrus has changed for the better or if all this is a ruse for more evil to come to the soap.
