David Hasselhoff was one of the cast members on The Young and the Restless at the beginning of his career. He played Snapper Foster, an original character who was introduced at the beginning of the soap in March 1973. The character was originally played by William Gray Espy for two years, and Hasselhoff took over in 1975.

The character left the screen in 1982 when Hasselhoff got the lead role in the TV show Knight Rider. After his exit, the character and the Foster family were briefly phased out from the soap. Aside from a brief cameo in 2010, Snapper Foster remained offscreen.

The character Snapper Foster moved out of Genoa City in 1982, when he accepted a fellowship opportunity in London to further his medical career. Initially, his wife did not want to leave her modeling role at Jabot Cosmetics behind. However, she grew more open to the idea over time and the whole family (including the couple's daughter Jennifer) moved away to London eventually.

Snapper Foster's storyline and plot on The Young and the Restless explored

With the opening of The Young and Restless in 1973, Snapper Foster was introduced as a 24-year-old medical student. One of his first storylines was him juggling between his feelings for Chris Brooks and Sally McGuire.

The plot often switches between his relationships with the two women, with him being respectful and loving with Chris but also seeking physical intimacy with Sally.

Sally got pregnant with Snapper's child but before the pregnancy was revealed, he broke up with her for Chris. He even got engaged to her, breaking Sally's heart. After Sally left town, Chris and Snapper got married and Chris even got pregnant. However, Snapper started to worry that a child might interrupt his medical career.

Sally gave birth to her baby and named him Pierre Charles, nicknamed Chuckie. Though Chris initially spent time with Sally and Chuckie, she soon realized that Snapper was the father of the baby. After realizing this, the shock was too much for her and she suffered a miscarriage.

Chris briefly separated from Snapper, but the two reconciled after Sally moved away again to Chicago. In the late 1970s on The Young and the Restless, Snapper opened up his own clinic. His personal life also progressed as he and Chris became foster parents for a girl named Karen Becker. In 1981, Chris and Snapper had a little girl of their own, whom they named Jennifer Elizabeth Foster.

After the birth of their daughter, Snapper and Chris decided to move out of town after he got a fellowship in London. After a break, William Gray Espy returned as Snapper in 2003 when Jill was revealed to be not biologically related to Fosters. In 2010, David Hasselhoff as Snapper paid a surprise visit to Genoa City after many years.

He arrived just in time to treat his mother Liz Foster, who told him about his sister Jill's true parentage on her deathbed. However, Snapper soon returned to Chris after this incident and has not been seen as an active role on The Young and the Restless ever since.
