Elizabeth "Liz" Webber was introduced in General Hospital as the granddaughter of Dr. Steve Hardy, the soap's very first leading man. Her father was Dr. Jeff Webber and her mother was Carolyn Webber. Ric Lansing was introduced as the son of attorney and mobster Trevor Lansing, and his mistress Adela Corinthos. Both of his parents were dead.
The two became a prominent couple in General Hospital after meeting in 2002. The couple got married twice during the show's run and almost had a child together in 2003, but Elizabeth suffered a miscarriage.
While Elizabeth was portrayed as a positive influence on Ric, his possessive tendencies continued to cause friction in the couple's romance.
Ric and Elizabeth's relationship in General Hospital began in 2002
Elizabeth and Ric first met at a club of Luke Spencer's in 2002. At the time, Elizabeth worked at Kelly's diner as a waitress, and Ric lived above Kelly's apartment. After the two tied the knot in 2003. Ric's ex-lover, Faith Rosco, grew jealous and vindictive.
Elizabeth was bitten by a snake in her art studio that was let loose by Faith. While being treated for the snakebite, Liz discovered that she was pregnant. Faith then stepped up her vendetta and outright pushed Liz down the stairs, causing her to suffer a miscarriage.
This had a devastating effect on Ric, who incorrectly assumed that Sonny Corinthos was behind the attack on Elizabeth. In retaliation, he kidnapped Sonny's wife, Carly, and locked her inside a panic room of his newly purchased house. He planned to steal and keep Carly's baby for himself and Elizabeth.
One day Elizabeth accidentally found the panic room and saw Carly in captivity. This resulted in Elizabeth divorcing Ric, and the two went their separate ways.
Later, Elizabeth got in a hit-and-run accident with a car driven by Courtney Matthews. Faith continued her vendetta by framing Ric for the accident, and Jason Morgan covered up Courtney's guilt. Ric got falsely implicated but was determined to win Elizabeth back.
Elizabeth subsequently had an affair with Zander Smith and became pregnant with his child. By this time, she began to reconcile with Ric, culminating in the couple having their second wedding. The couple decided to raise Zander's child as their own, with Zander blessing them.
The two made a dedicated effort to make their marriage work, but over time, Ric's vendetta against Sonny caused Elizabeth to divorce him before she gave birth to her baby. The baby turned out to be a boy who she named Cameron.
Elizabeth and Ric would reignite their romance from the 2014-2016 seasons of General Hospital
The couple continued to have a turbulent dynamic in the many seasons of General Hospital from 2014 to 2016. Ric reconnected with Liz after returning to Port Charles in 2014. However, they were once again driven apart thanks to Ric faking his death.
By the time General Hospital revealed that Ric was alive, Liz had already moved on and found love in Jake Doe, an amnesia patient she'd treated as a nurse.
Ric then sought to ruin Jake's reputation and hired Hayden Barnes to pretend to be Jake's wife. Liz broke up with Jake due to this misunderstanding. Ric's success at getting back Liz was short-lived, as she dumped him at the 2016 Nurses' Ball after she learned the truth of what he'd done.
Ric and Elizabeth would reconnect in the 2024 season of General Hospital
Once Ric returned to Port Charles in 2024, sparks began to fly between him and Elizabeth once more. They proceeded to go on an ice cream date. This hints at the possibility of the couple reigniting their romance.
Actor Rick Hearst (who plays Ric Lansing) told Soap Opera Digest, that Ric's character is very much willing to get together with Elizabeth. He said:
"The more he actually interacts with Elizabeth and makes advances and movements toward her while he’s in town, the more he’s going to understand that this is a different time — but he ain’t giving up!”
It will be interesting to see how the show proceeds in the future and what holds for Ric and Elizabeth.
